Star Trek may have forced its way back into the mainstream in the last few years thanks to J.J. Abrams’ reboot of The Original Series, but that’s not the only way fans can enjoy the universe. Fans have been pioneering Trek projects for years now, the most successful being Star Trek Continued and Star Trek: Of Gods and Men, but the crowdfunded pilot for Star Trek: Renegades has gained a lot of traction over the last year, and we finally have a full-length trailer to show for it.

Check it out!

Renegades stars a few Trek veterans, including Tim Russ reprising his role as Tuvok (along with directing the pilot episode) and Walter Koenig as an older Admiral Chekov, as well as Robert Picardo, Gary Graham, Richard Herd, and Manu Intiraymi. The rest of the cast includes familiar faces like Vic Mignogna (from literally every anime and Star Trek Continues), Grant Imahara (Mythbusters), and Sean Young (Blade Runner). Perhaps the most interesting member of the cast is Adrienne Wilkinson, taking on the role of Captain Lexxa Singh, dynamic leader of the Renegades and direct descendant of Khan Noonien Singh. It’ll be exciting to see another woman in the captain’s chair, especially one with such an interesting background.

The path to production has been a long one, but Renegades has kept its momentum through several crowdfunding efforts, the first being completed on Kickstarter in 2012. Subsequent campaigns on Indiegogo were successfully funded in 2013 and 2014, giving the production nearly a solid $400k to work with.

The series will take place ten years after the starship Voyager‘s return from the Delta Quadrant, where they find the Federation in a crisis. The main suppliers of dilithium crystals are disappearing, and space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. The phenomenon isn’t natural, meaning someone or something is making it happen. The Federation has to take drastic measures – ones that aren’t within their normal jurisdiction. Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager‘s former security officer and head of the newly reorganized Section 31, Starfleet’s autonomous intelligence and defense organization. Tuvok’s mission is to put together a new covert, renegade crew – made up mostly of outcasts, rogues, and criminals – tasked with finding out what is causing this anomaly and stopping it at all costs.

The great news is that if CBS likes the pilot it will be picked up for a full series, meaning Star Trek will finally be back on television after a 10 year absence. Even if CBS doesn’t go for a series, Russ plans to release the film independently on DVD and Blu-ray this year.
