NBCUniversal is taking advantage of their internet-savvy audience, announcing plans to launch more than a dozen original online series. In a time when a good portion of television is consumed online, and Netflix original series like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards are smash hits, now is as good a time as any for NBC to throw their hat in the digital series ring.

The shows will air on their website, NBC.com, as well as on other sites, such as video-on-demand and Hulu. NBC also plans on working with advertisers to develop some of their original content. While the shows themselves will appear online, promos and ads for the series will be shown on NBC’s television networks.

“The combination of digital video alongside television content is extremely powerful and becoming an increasingly important part of the connection advertisers make with consumers,” said President of Advertising Sales for NBCUniversal Linda Yaccarino. “We want to offer our partners the unique ability to harness the power of our creative assets along with our distribution capabilities including the video-on-demand platform like no other company can do.”

Online shows from Universal Cable Productions include Tesla and Twain, a comedy about the friendship between Nikola Tesla and Mark Twain, who are suddenly transported to modern LA, and Last Single Girl, about a girl who’s overqualified but underemployed dealing with becoming an adult and watching her friends develop relationships around her.

Universal Television’s first series to appear on NBC.com will be Saturday Night Line and Heroes Reborn: Digital Series. Saturday Night Line is a socially interactive show about superfans waiting outside 30 Rock in the SNL standby line. Heroes Reborn: Digital Series is an online prequel for the previously announced Heroes Reborn series, airing on NBC in 2015.

“It’s exciting to bring original content to the forefront on all of our digital platforms, ” said Robert Hayes, Executive Vice President of Digital Media. “We are lucky to once again be in business with some of the top producers in Hollywood making new content to further engage fans.”
