The Lone Wolf adventure gamebooks are coming back in the form of a tabletop RPG. Cubicle 7, who have previously published RPG systems for Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings, is creating one for Joe Devers’ classic series. Their Kickstarter has close to tripled its goal as of this post, and in an interview with io9, they mention planning a variety of supplements and adventures to add to the starter set.

Anyone who read/played the gamebooks that came out in the 80s surely recognizes the Lone Wolf series by Joe Dever. Here’s the cover to Book 1, Flight from the Dark, as a reminder:

I spent a lot of time reading the first full series of 12 books as a kid, putting transparent tape on the “Kai Action Charts” so I could replay them. I remember how clever I thought I was by “memorizing” where the best numbers on the Random Number Tables were. And some of the initial illustrations by Gary Chalk spawned my first nightmares. I’d say the Lone Wolf series was my gateway to non-video game RPGs, both in gamebook and tabletop form.

The team at Cubicle 7 plans to release the The Lone Wolf Adventure Game in May 2015. While the original Lone Wolf series is out of print, you can play HTML versions approved by Joe Dever at Project Aon.
