A moment of silence please for a legend. At the Venice Film Festival, Studio Ghibli president Koji Hoshino announced that 72 year old director Hayao Miyazaki will retire from the production of feature length films. According to the report on Anime News Network, “Ghibli’s announcement does not rule out the possibility of Miyazaki working on shorter projects or other endeavors.” Reading the statement, it also does not rule out any advisory positions he could continue to hold at Ghibli.
Since 1979, Miyazaki has directed 11 feature films, including Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, the Oscar nominated Howl’s Moving Castle, and the Oscar winning Spirited Away.
In addition to directing, Miyazaki also served as a producer and a writer for many of Studio Ghibli’s other projects including Whisper of the Heart, The Secret World of Arrietty, and From Up on Poppy Hill.
Only a few weeks ago, when asked about sequels to his films, Miyazaki expressed interest in a sequel to 1984′s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, but stressed that he would have no large role in it. He suggested for the job Hideaki Anno, a key animator on the original, best known for directing Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Miyazaki retiring from full-length features is the spiritual equivalent of Walt Disney doing the same. It would be wise then to not miss out on the theatrical release of his final feature, The Wind Rises, which is currently playing in Japan. Disney has announced that it will be releasing the film in North America under its Touchstone Banner; dates have not yet been confirmed.
You can bet that this news means a MASSIVE Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki feature will be on our site soon. Keep an eye out.
