I almost didn’t post this until tomorrow, but I think the best way to honor Robin Williams is to enjoy what we have while we can. So this is for him. Carpe Diem.
Emma is standing at her bookshelf, balancing a large pile of binders and papers, and drops some of the papers on the floor when Harriet comes in with coffee. Things are awwwwwkward between them, although Emma is trying to behave normally. Harriet notices the papers that Emma dropped are some that Maddy was looking for, and Emma says they were on Alex’s desk. She had just been passing by. (I bet. She probably sat at his chair and stroked his keyboard and cried. I would have.) Harriet says she’ll get them to Maddy later. Awkward pause. Harriet asks if Emma is ready to install her new accounting software– she’d asked Harriet to help her try again. Emma replies that she doesn’t know what went wrong, since she followed all the directions, but Harriet says that sometimes it can be tricky and that Alex showed her how to set it up last time he updated his software. Emma suddenly decides that they shouldn’t make Maddy wait for the projections and sends Harriet to give them to her. In fact, she should take her to lunch, and spend the rest of the afternoon with her. Harriet asks what she’s going to do about the software, and Emma says she can figure it out on her own, because she’s Emma Woodhouse!
Except that’s not her plan. Instead, she called our favorite bird-watching poker player, Bobby Martin! I admit that I was a bit confused as to her motives for calling him. I was kind of afraid that she was trying to push him back at Harriet (and Harriet away from Alex), and maybe that is a little bit of her motivation– at least, I think she does want to see if he might still be interested in Harriet. But I actually think that it’s more of an attempt to make things right with all the people she’s wronged. She realized last episode that she’s been wrong about pretty much everything, including her own feelings, and she wanted to attempt to make amends with B-Mart. So as he’s installing her software, she makes attempts to make small talk and be genuinely interested in him– she even remembers that he likes bird watching. He’s about to tell her about his latest spot when Emma’s computer dings to say that the install was done. It’s so nice to see Emma making an effort (and Martin is STILL ADORABLE and James Brent Issacs is a super nice guy, too, and we had a great discussion about Austen at LeakyCon). After he fixes Emma’s install, which took no time at all, she sends him to take a look at Harriet’s computer, and the fact that she sent Harriet away all afternoon makes me pretty sure that when she says that she didn’t want things to be awkward for him or Harriet, she’s telling the truth. Martin, adorably, says that he’ll just go look at Harriet’s computer– unawkwardly. Emma looks worried and sighs a bit after he leaves.
In Harriet’s office, Martin is working on her computer when Harriet comes in. Harriet is happy to see him! She’s not nearly as uncertain around him as last time we saw them together, and it’s Martin that’s kind of awkward instead. Harriet explains that she was supposed to take Maddy to lunch, but she couldn’t go because she had to take Mama to the eye doctor. Harriet says that it’s been a while, and Martin agrees that it has, and that things seem different at Emma Approved. Harriet admits that they are, and that she got a promotion. Martin says that he saw a bunch of new projects on her desktop, and then apologizes that he didn’t mean to be snoopy. Which makes her reply that she didn’t think he was sitting there daydreaming about being a fighter pilot, and he laughs and quotes You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Harriet says she loves that musical and that Snoopy is the best, and he says that he actually identifies more with Charlie Brown than Snoopy, and she says that he’s a guy who doesn’t give up easily, then, and he says something like that, and it’s so darn cute I’m going to go into a diabetic coma. Anyway, Martin asks about all the spreadsheets, and she says that Alex has been showing her the business side of things, and Martin says he always knew she’d succeed, and Alex is a great mentor and a great friend. He’s always telling Martin to believe in himself and follow his passions, and I love that Martin and Alex are still hanging out together. Harriet isn’t sure how to respond to that, and asks if he’s seen any new birds. He does tell Harriet about his latest find, an indigo bunting, which is a gorgeous bird! (at least the the male is– the female is rather unremarkable). He shows her a picture, and says that he knows people think bird watching is silly, but Harriet thinks it’s cool that he likes to appreciate everything around him. He says thanks, and then Harriet asks him if he wants to come to lunch. Martin replies that he has another job to go to. Harriet asks for a raincheck. He says that it doesn’t rain very often in Southern California. Obviously, Martin is not yet ready to forgive Harriet, and I kind of can’t blame him. She still looks a bit hurt when he leaves.
Emma is doing something on her computer when Harriet pokes her head in to let her know that she’s back. Emma has her come sit. Harriet tells her about Maddy and asks if she got her software fixed. Emma says that she did, and says that she’s sorry if Harriet ran into Martin, as that was not her intention. Harriet says that she’s glad that Emma called him, that she’s been a bit overloaded lately and she’s glad Emma asked for more help. This makes Emma feel even more awful (she must be a huge ball of conflicting emotions toward Harriet right now, poor woman) and she apologizes to Harriet for relying on her too much, and ordering her around, and even, on occasion, dictating what she can and can’t do, and that’s not right. Emma tells Harriet that she should be with someone who respects and values her and who sees her for who she is. Emma kind of half-jokingly says “I should?” and Emma clarifies, taking Harriet’s hand. What she means is that Harriet should date whoever she wants to, no matter what Emma says, and if that means Alex, then that’s fine. That’s good. Harriet says thanks, and is still a little unsure, but I think Emma did a really big thing there. Acknowledging her wrong behavior toward Harriet, and giving Alex up to her if that’s the way things are going to be, are big.
Emma is alone and looking at her computer camera. She says that when she thinks about the past year, it’s been more than just bad matchmaking. It’s like she hasn’t even noticed how the people around her really feel– not to mention how she feels. With tears in her eyes, she says “I’m in. . . I realized that I. . . I thought it was just, but it’s not. I’m in love with Alex Knightley.” Then there’s a cut, and she says “Have I really been this blind or have I been lying to myself the whole time” and the camera angle switches and Alex is in the doorway, starting to walk in, and Emma continues with a sigh and “Well, that stops now.” And my heart skipped a beat thinking that Alex had heard what she said about being in love with him, but there was that cut and there’s no way that he did but I love that they made my heart skip a beat thinking that it might be possible. (But I don’t actually want him to have heard. That would remove some of the beauty of the climax –SPOILERS if you haven’t read the book– because at this point, he still thinks she’s in love with Frank, and what he did overhear there could definitely be seen as confirmation of that, and the beauty of the proposal scene in the book is that they both think the other person is in love with someone else, and they’d better not mess with that if they know what’s good for them). And ALEX LEAVES. HE LEAVES. HE FREAKING LEAVES. Emma keeps talking and says that she’s going to start paying attention to the people around her and how they really feel, and now I’m sure that’s why she called Martin in. She means it.
AND IN THE NEXT VIDEO EMMA IS IN A DIFFERENT OUTFIT AND ALEX IS LEANING ON THE DOORWAY WITH HIS HANDS IN HIS KHAKI POCKETS AND SHE TURNS AROUND AND HE WALKS IN WITH HIS HANDS IN HIS POCKETS AND HOW ON EARTH AM I GOING TO WAIT UNTIL THURSDAY.
