Here we go! It’s the final four episodes! Now we shall be all ready and eager to see tomorrow’s new episode. I know I can hardly wait!

Episode # 45:

Emma is still upset with Alex for saying that she and Caroline are similar. Okay, she admits there are some similarities– they’re both fashionable, well-educated women from influential families whose careers involve networking. But that is where the similarities end, she insists. Emma declares that she is not a hair-tossing fake-smiling condescending control freak. As she tosses her hair.

Emma says that it’s clear that a few superficial easily-obtained requirements were all that Senator Elton wanted in a wife. All he wanted was a high-powered socialite on his arm. She also doesn’t like her interference in Jane Fairfax’s life, or the fact that they hired her and then are simply telling her what to do instead of taking any of her suggestions. Both Caroline and James are coming to discuss the menus, and though there have been a few hiccups, Emma is sure that she’s found a solution.

Caroline is sitting next to Emma, finger-combing her hair with her eyes closed. Okay, seriously, Caroline? When Emma asks if she’s okay, she says she’s having a stellar hair day. Isn’t she pretty much always having a stellar hair day? Emma cuts short Caroline’s suggestion that she go see her stylist to discuss the menu. Apparently, Chef Serle is willing to do a macrobiotic menu, kind of. His cooking style is spice-heavy and so doesn’t lend itself to macrobiotic cooking. Emma suggests that they should instead go for a macrobiotic-inspired menu, but Caroline is having none of it, and wants a different chef. Emma suggests that they could hire a different chef to make just her and Elton’s meals, while everyone else would have the macrobiotic-inspired food cooked by Chef Serle. Caroline says that’s silly and takes out her phone to text “a couple of friends.” Once she’s done, she says that’s taken care of, as Chef Serle will be let go by the end of the day. Emma is shocked, but Caroline is nonchalant. She’s sure Chef Serle will be able to collect unemployment, have a nice severance, and open his own little restaurant. Emma says that they can’t know that (although, actually Caroline’s prediction has come true, as Chef Serle has announced on Twitter that he’s opening a restaurant this summer in Sanditon. Caroline isn’t the only woman with connections, hah!). Caroline goes back to playing with her hair when James Elton comes in. He’s apparently early, as their reservations for dinner with Ryan and Annie Weston have been moved up. In fact, they’re going to ask Annie to help with the desserts for the engagement party. Emma is a bit confused as to how you’re going to have macrobiotic desserts (since it tends to avoid processed things like, you know, sugar) but James says that they can bend a little for the desserts. So macrobiotic-inspired is okay for the desserts but not anything else, huh? Anyway, Caroline says they would have invited Emma, but it’s a couples-only thing (like Emma would have wanted to come anyway). James says that he’s hopeful to get marriage advice from the newlyweds, as the best person to get relationship advice from is someone who’s already in a relationship. Man, Caroline and James are a couple of jerks. They share a sickening kiss (even Emma can’t help but make a face) and James leaves. Caroline says thank you, and it was fun, and that she’s glad she could make Emma’s life better. Ugh, Caroline. I’m afraid Emma’s prediction is right– Those two are bringing out the worst in each other.

Episode # 46:

Emma tells Alex that this is definitely not about redemption for Elton and Caroline. It’s about “REVENGE!” She’s right, Alex. You’re not around when they’re both sniping at Emma and trying to make her feel bad about herself and her singleness. He doesn’t quite believe her, though, since they are paying them a lot of money to plan their party (and all their deposit checks have cleared). Alex says they need to bring this down to earth. Emma very seriously reminds Alex that the reason she does this, is to help people. She like the matchmaking because believes in the idea of love, the life coaching because she wants to see people reach their fullest potential, and the party planning because she loves creating good memories. Alex says yes, it’s very rewarding. Emma says that what she’s doing right now is toxic– it’s just two incredibly selfish people using their engagement to torture anyone who has ever hurt their feelings. Which makes me wonder if Lizzie and Darcy were invited, and if so, how exactly Caroline planned to rub it in their faces. Maybe because they’re not engaged yet and she is? Anyway, Alex says that he gets that, but that he’s not sure what she wants from him. Emma says she’s outnumbered– she can’t deal with the two of them and watch over Harriet. He says she’s not outnumbered– there are two of them, and there are two of us, and she isn’t in this alone. He assures Emma that if she worries about the clients, he will take care of Harriet. And he will, too. Because unlike James Elton, Alex Knightley really is a nice guy. Emma makes Alex pinky-swear on it, and then he kisses his pinky-swear fist. Emma doesn’t know why he did that, and he says that’s how you pinky-swear. I’ve never seen it done like that, Alex. She sends him on his way, amused.

Caroline is coming in for one last meeting to iron out the details before setting up the venue this weekend. She is NOT going to let Caroline and Elton get to them, and despite Caroline, it’s going to be an awesome party. We switch to Emma, Caroline, and Harriet sitting and discussing the menu. Caroline checks her nails and tosses her hair and says that the new chef she brought on is doing great, and that Annie is working wonders with the desserts now that the lifted the macrobiotic restriction a bit. Emma is a little concerned that Annie is handling all the desserts on her own, but Caroline says she’s perfectly capable of it. Emma still says it’s a lot to ask, and Caroline says that she’s just teasing, and that Annie recommended a vegan bakery that can help supplement the desserts. Caroline is pointedly ignoring Harriet’s presence this whole time, talking exclusively to Emma. She suggests sending Harriet to get some samples from the vegan bakery during her lunch run to help them decide what to order. Emma says that Harriet doesn’t do lunch runs, and Caroline says she thought Harriet was her assistant. Emma says Harriet has been promoted. “Oh,” Caroline says. “That’s too bad.” I really want Emma to slap Caroline across the face right about now. Anyway, Harriet says it’s fine, she’ll get lunch and samples. Emma says she should stay because she has music suggestions, but Harriet says they can wait. Caroline immediately sends her on her way– a bit out of the way, in fact. As soon as Harriet leaves, Caroline wants to discuss the music. Ugh.

Harriet goes to her desk to get her purse, and ends up sitting down, staring at the address in her hand. Alex comes in and asks what’s going on, since she’s supposed to be in the meeting. Harriet admits that they’re talking about music for the party without her. Harriet says that Caroline isn’t interested in anything she has to say, and why should she, as she’s only an assistant. “Event Coordinator,” Alex reminds her, and says that nobody knows music better than her. She knows she’s good at her job. “What about Caroline?” Harriet asks. “Caroline doesn’t matter,” Alex says. What matters is Emma, and how she thinks Harriet is doing– which is great. He says she deserves to be there, and not to let anyone tell her differently– even herself. Harriet doesn’t know what to do, and Alex says she needs to figure out her way to do things, not Emma’s way or anyone else’s. Emma believes in her, and so does Alex. Harriet thinks for a minute and starts typing on her computer.

Caroline says that she wants the DJ to stick to a strict list approved only by them. Harriet comes back in and takes a seat. Caroline says “you’re still here. Is there a problem?” Nope, no problem. Harriet called the bakery to see if they deliver, and while Caroline is right that they don’t, they do participate in a delivery service that will pick up your order and then bring it to you. Caroline says that could take forever, but Harriet replies that they’re already on their way and will be there in about 20 minutes. Emma is bursting with pride at Harriet’s standing up to Caroline, who, while not very pleased, finally agrees. Emma asks Harriet to add her opinion on the playlist, and while Caroline gets in a “but, I” Emma has Harriet go on. Harriet has this great idea to print out love letters written between former presidents and their wives and then having the DJ play music inspired by the letters. Caroline, reluctantly, admits that Harriet’s suggestions will work, and Harriet and Emma share a triumphant glance across Caroline.

Episode #47:

Emma is all dressed up and ready for the party. She’s so excited, mostly to get it over with. Even though there’s an option for Emma Approved to plan their wedding, Emma is going to refuse– it is definitely NOT Emma Approved. Actually, from a logistics standpoint, the planning was pretty easy, since Caroline mostly did it herself while Emma complimented her on her accessories. “If all my jobs were that easy, I’d. . . run into oncoming traffic.” Harriet comes in wearing a lovely blue evening dress, and Harriet compliments her on her look. Harriet has never done an updo before and had to watch three YouTube videos to figure it out. Man, I wish YouTube were around when I had long hair and went to dances. My updos were pretty horrible. Anyway, Emma tells Harriet how proud she is of her– how she handled all of the drama. She will be honored to stand next to her tonight.

James Elton appears at the door. He makes an excuse about Caroline missing one of her favorite earrings and wondering if it were at the office. Harriet gets up to check if the cleaners left anything at the front desk. As she passes Elton, he asks what’s the occasion for her looking so nice. Harriet confusedly replies that she’s working the party that night. He says he was under the impression that the staff would be in the kitchen. Emma breaks in and says of course, they’ll stay out of their way, but James clarifies– they sent two invitations, one for Emma, and one for Alex. Harriet, of course is still standing right there. WHAT. A. JERK. Elton says that they had more guests than expected and all the tables are full, as Emma should know since she made the seating chart. Emma says that Caroline did, and last time she checked, they all had seats. He says they had to make some last minute changes. Emma says they can work something out, but James says they’re no room and that he’s very sorry. Sure you are, State Senator Scumbag. Harriet’s about to leave when Alex appears, asking if everyone is ready to go. Harriet says she’s not going because the venue is full, but Alex says that she’s going with him. As his plus-one. Elton is Seriously Not Pleased, but he can’t really do much about it. Harriet is thrilled. Elton excuses himself. Alex sits next to Emma. She says thank you, and Alex says she worked hard and deserves it. Emma says that he was right about Senator Elton– he’s always had an agenda. Alex says that she was right, too– she chose for him better than he chose for himself.

Emma asks if she should warn Harriet about Alex’s dancing. Alex laughingly asks “there’s dancing?” Emma gets up to leave. “Wait, seriously. There’s dancing?” Alex follows Emma out of the office. “No one said anything about dancing! Emma! I’m not dancing!” Love.

Episode # 48:

Emma celebrates the fact that they DID IT. The party was even a lot of fun! The morning after the party, though, isn’t so much fun. You’re left with emptiness and questions about your choices. “So many questions,” Emma says. She does not like this feeling.

Harriet brings in some coffee, even though she doesn’t have to do that anymore. Harriet is surprisingly upbeat. She had a great time at the party. And she can 100% say that there are no lingering feelings for State Senator Scumbag. Emma suggests that they should just take it easy today, when Caroline appears. Harriet excuses herself, cheerfully offering Caroline a latte, which she declines, and Caroline takes a seat. She says she wants to thank her for a fantastic party– it was the event of the year, until the wedding, of course. Caroline pauses expectantly, and then asks if Emma is going to inquire about that opportunity. Emma asks if she’s offering it. Caroline says that she’s considering considering it, and Emma says then that’s when she’ll consider it. Hee.

Caroline cuts to the chase and asks Emma what she knew about Caroline before she came. Emma says she only heard rumors, and Caroline wants to know if she believed them. Emma says she believed that she is a strong, independent, determined woman who seizes opportunities. Caroline says that they share those traits, and Emma says they’re not the same. Caroline says that they’re both willing to do whatever it takes for the people they care about, and Emma says that’s true (although I’m not sure Emma would do whatever it takes. She wouldn’t, for example, try to get someone fired just because he wouldn’t cook the macrobiotic menu she wanted. Emma does have some scruples). Emma asks why Caroline really hired them, and suggests that it was because she wanted to see the woman who first caught Elton’s eye. Caroline doesn’t deny it, but doesn’t agree to it either. She says that James is the one who chose Emma Approved, not her. Emma says that she knows why James picked them– to remind Emma of her failures– but Caroline keeps insisting that James did it to make her life miserable and Caroline wanted to prove that she was better than Emma. Caroline says that this isn’t a competition– but if it was, she already won. Well, yeah. She won James Elton. Somehow I don’t think that’s a prize that Emma particularly wanted. Caroline gives her the final payment, and implies that without Caroline and James’s business, Emma’s own business would soon fail. As Caroline gets up to leave, Emma wishes her happiness in her relationship, and Caroline, after some thought, wishes her success in her future endeavors. “No, you don’t,” Emma replies. Caroline just blinks thoughtfully at the camera and gets up to leave.

Alex comes in and asks if she’s okay. Emma hands them the final check with a “I hope you’re happy,” and Alex says that he does like seeing a lot of zeros. Emma says they were empty zeros. She doesn’t like planning parties for awful people, and although Alex is right that Emma needed the win (even if only to prove that, in the end, she is a better person than either Elton or Caroline), Emma is also right when she says that if this is a win, why does it feel like they lost. Alex points out that she and Harriet had to overcome a lot of obstacles to pull it off and that everyone came out ahead. Emma says that they didn’t do what they set out to do– to make people’s lives better. Alex says that’s a point of view, but Emma is insistent. She wants to feel good about who they help. She reminds him about how it felt to help Maddie– a good person who deserved it– and they helped save the planet, too. Alex says okay, let’s start focusing on only helping good people (and maybe the planet, too). Emma’s excited about that idea– making the world better, not just people’s lives better. Alex is amused, but also has a serious suggestion to make– this is a pretty big change in direction for her. Whereas at the beginning of the series, her biggest goal was to land a big-name client to make herself look good, now she actually wants to help people and causes who need it. He says it’ll take a while, and she says that’s okay, as long as it’s Emma Approved. “What if it’s Knightley Disapproved?” Alex asks, and Emma laughs and says he should put that on Facebook. He says that with this new direction, they should think about doing some recruiting, expanding the team. Emma asks if he has someone in mind. He says maybe someone who works in charity, involved in the community, fights social injustice, has a masters in social policy. . . “Wait a second,” Emma says. “We are NOT recruiting Jane Fairfax.”

Except they did. Hoping to see Jane Fairfax in the new episode tomorrow!
