The Wascana Country Club will play host to the 2017 Canadian men’s mid-amateur golf championship, Golf Canada has announced.

The event is set for Aug. 21-25 of next year and will feature 156 Canadian and international competitors in the mid-amateur (25 and over) and mid-master (40-plus) categories. There will also be an interprovincial team competition involving the 10 provinces.

Regina teams swept the gold medals Saturday in Kipling at a regional qualifier for the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association badminton championships, which are slated for May 14 in Humboldt.

The winners were Taylor Whitehead of Thom (boys singles), Cindy Chung of O’Neill (girls singles), Thomas Lowe and Jimmy Feng of Luther (boys doubles), Sarah Kowalski and Trang Dong of O’Neill (girls doubles) and Johnna Parenteau and Daren Ibon of O’Neill (mixed doubles).

Two O’Neill teams — Orion Hombrebueno and Travis Chalus (boys doubles) and Liam Schmidt and Kaitlyn Rydzik (mixed doubles) — won silver medals and will also advance to provincials.

The Royal Road Race was held Saturday at the RCMP Training Academy.

The victorious runners were Adam Strueby of Regina (five-kilometre male event), Randi-Lee Loshack of Saskatoon (5km female), Ian Fyfe of Regina (10km male), Katelyn Silversides of Regina (10km female), Aiden Norton of Regina (Mini-Mountie Run male) and Nikolina Kapovic of Moose Jaw (Mini-Mountie Run female).

The race is the result of an annual partnership between the RCMP and the Jaleta Pacers.

Proceeds raised by the Jaleta Pacers will go to Regina’s Early Years Family Centre. Money raised by the RCMP will go to Mountie House, a partnership between the RCMP and Habitat For Humanity Regina.

Jake Hesselink of Regina was first in two events and fourth all-around in the men’s national open category at the Western Canadian gymnastics championships in Richmond, B.C.

Hesselink was first in the vault and the parallel bars in addition to placing fourth in the floor exercise and sixth in the rings.

Weyburn’s Graham DeLaet finished in a tie for 77th at the PGA’s Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

DeLaet and Vijay Singh both finished at 8-over-par 296.

DeLaet had back-to-back rounds of 1-under-par 72 before shooting a 76 on Saturday and a 78 on Sunday.

Over 72 holes, DeLaet had 11 birdies. He had pledged $500 per birdie to the Canadian Red Cross to assist victims of the fire in Fort McMurray, Alta., and will therefore donate $5,500 to the cause.

Moose Jaw-born Adam Hadwin, who was in a four-way tie for 61st after shooting a 4-over-par 292, also pledged $500 per birdie and will be donating $5,000.

The West Kelowna Warriors won the Western Canada Cup junior A hockey championship Saturday night at Affinity Place in Estevan.

West Kelowna, champions of the BCHL, blanked the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits 6-0. West Kelowna earned a berth in the RBC Cup national junior A championship, slated for May 14-22 in Lloydminster.

On Sunday, Brooks defeated the MJHL’s Portage Terriers 2-1 to earn the earn the second RBC Cup berth from the Western Canada Cup, which consisted of five teams.
