A team of students from SU Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) has won the 1st Place Award at the 3rd Annual NY State Pollution Prevention Institute Competition for Student research Projects. The Syracuse Team was selected for the Top Prize, based on their innovative work, addressing heating issues at Syracuse University’s Maxwell school building. This project was developed by the IAC student team, based on their exploratory work and discussions with SU’s energy management office.

The team was led by Enrica Galasso (BS ME ’13, MS EM ’15) and consisted of team members Jillian Burgoyne (BS ME ’14, MS EM ‘16), Ryan Milcarek (BS ME ’14, ME PhD student) and Mark Seibel (BS ME ’15).

The competition involved multiple stages: 1) In November 2013, the team applied to NYSP2I for a competitive student research grant. NYSP2I received grant applications from many engineering schools in New York State. After proposal review by external reviewers, SU team was selected to receive one of the student research grants; 2) the SU IAC team worked on their project, completed their work and submitted a “sanitized project report” (without names or any other identifiers) for an external review organized by NYP2I, 3) the team made poster and poster and podium presentations (at the NYP2I annual event) to an external panel of judges. Based on the team’s performance in all of these stages, the SU IAC team was selected to receive the first prize. The SU IAC team beat out competition from Cornell, Clarkson and others.
