Happiness is something that we spend time pursuing. The danger of this pursuit is that we tend to treat happiness as a commodity, as if we could purchase it at the mall, stumble upon it on a Google search, or order it to be delivered in the mail. Numerous quotes tell us how to find happiness, extolling the virtues of this elusive state, or affirming that happiness is already here.

Yet, the pursuit of happiness is something much more fundamental. According to the teachings of yoga, happiness is already within us. When we pursue something that is close to our hearts, the blinking light on the GPS marking our destination marks where we are already standing. As someone who was literally named for happiness (the Latin root of the name Felicia evokes happiness), I understand the need for the search as well as the simple discovery of its ever-present truth.

One of the ways in which we find the road to the present moment is through the examples of people around us, others who have left footprints on the soft soil of the path.

In the docudrama Finding Happiness, Elizabeth Rohm explores this question through the teachings and community at the Ananda Village in Northern California. Her quest reveals the truth of the yoga tradition—that the answers are within the self, and our community of fellow seekers support the shift in our perspective that allows this revelation.

Join us at the film screening November 14 (purchase tickets in advance before they sell out!) and stay for the Q&A after the viewing. And in your everyday life, notice the moments of happiness that are within view, and experience the perspective that puts it into focus.

With happiness,

Felicia Marie Tomasko, RN

Remembering Lou Reed

The opening bass line of “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” brings about a certain nostalgia, and most of us break into a chorus of “doo do-doo doo doo do-doo…” when we hear it. American icon and iconoclast, musician, songwriter, and cultural alchemist Lou Reed  left the building on October 27, but his legacy and impact will continue to live on.

In sharing our own memories of Lou Reed, we reached into our LA Yoga archives to revisit this June, 2007 interview which was published after he released Hudson River Meditations, an album of music to accompany his Tai Chi practice. We hope you enjoy being reminded of Lou’s unique voice as much as we were.

Going Within and Untangling Our Beliefs

November 7

A time to reflect on our teachings and inspirations begins as Jupiter turns retrograde in Gemini. Trying to untangle and put into words our beliefs and what they mean is very important now. Since June of this year, we have been seeking to better understand our beliefs and convictions. Now is the time to go inward and gather more information and study.
