Fitness is a daily practice.

While we may understand this intellectually, there’s more to it than that–we must make a commitment to consistency. It’s a theme that’s currently evident in many aspects of my own life. Each of my birthdays marks more than an age, but a necessity to move (and to cross-train). Fortunately, living in LA offers numerous opportunities for this, some of which I’ve participated in this week, from lifting weights at the gym, to early morning runs, to the uphill climb of Runyon Canyon, to practicing at the Moksha Festival, late night walks on the beach in Malibu, to yoga on a helipad overlooking the entire city on the roof of the Intercontinental Hotel on Avenue of the Stars. And this doesn’t even begin to exhaust the possibilities available.

This week, my father is also being convinced of the benefit of regular exercise for managing blood sugar levels since he has type 2 diabetes. In the midst of a intensive program focused on diet and exercise, with instruction on reading labels in the grocery store as well as monitored fitness regimens, he’s watching his overly high blood sugar levels drop after a workout.

While our own feedback may come from a lab result, a glorious view, a feeling of being energized, or just having fun, this ongoing commitment, begun at any time of the year, has lifelong benefits.

On Saturday, July 27, the Santa Monica WellBeing Health and Fitness Festival fills the pedestrian areas of the Third Street Promenade with a variety of free interactive opportunities to learn more about how to support your own health and wellness practice. Mark your calendar.

Be well and fit,

Felicia Marie Tomasko, RN
