When I returned to LA after the whirlwind of family and friends during the holiday season, a moment that brought me to sweet tears was when I was reunited with my rescue dog Lulu.

She’s a nine-pound maltipoo (most likely) somewhere around two years old (again, most likely). Lulu is an amazing companion whose greatest service is unconditional love and joy. A rescue who was abandoned in downtown LA, she entered my life in a surprising moment and has become a delightful part of my family, keeping me company as I work at the computer and as I make the rounds around LA and beyond.

There are a number of stories like Lulu’s–animals of all kinds searching for homes. We’re starting a series in this newsletter collaborating with local rescue groups to help find homes for adoptable animals. For our first week we are highlighting Casey from The Forgotten Dog Organization. Please share this initiative far and wide and with friends and family. Chime in if you’d like to sponsor this effort or know someone who does. As part of the commitment that yogis have to compassion, we’ll be including stories related to animals in our March issue, so stay tuned and feel free to share ideas.

In the New Year, we may be living new commitments or simply becoming more aware of our interactions and interrelationships in all areas of our lives. Sharing information for compassion and change is one of ours.

With Compassion and Love,

Animals in Need: Meet Casey

Casey is an adorable 11 month old poodle/maltese that was abandoned in a grooming shop. He is very sweet and playful and great with other dogs and all people. He is also good with kids. Casey is an active dog so would be best with active owners. He is neutered, microchipped and current on all of his shots. If you would like to meet Casey please email or stop by The Forgotten Dog Foundation’s Sunday Adoption Eventswhich are held every Sunday morning.

The Forgotten Dog Foundation distinguishes itself by committing to using a foster-based boarding solution for our rescued dogs, rather than caging them in facilities, so that they may be rehabilitated in a loving home environment.

Interested in sponsoring our pet adoption section? Call 310-306-1785.

Celery – It’s More Than Just Crudités

In Southern California, we are fortunate to enjoy celery all year, but its season peaks in the cooler months of November through February. According to Michael Murray’s Encyclopedia of Healing Foods, with only 20 calories per rib, celery is an excellent source of both Vitamin C and fiber.

Astrology with Sam Geppi

A 30-day cycle of emotional centering begins with the Full Moon in Cancer on January 15. Cancer is the sign related to motherhood and selfless love; it reveals where emotional energy may become authentic devotion, but it may also lead to excessive sentimentality and emotion for the next 30 days. This Full Moon is in contrast to the Sun in Capricorn, which relates to establishing practical boundaries and material structures. Now we are challenged to harmonize our energy between the practical and the emotional. These two energetic forces support each other and lead to a greater clarification of each.
