The Superbowl is one example of how we come together in community, to celebrate, gather with friends, comment on commercials, eat, drink, and be merry—or perhaps take the opportunity to enjoy the traffic-free freeways and travel to Disneyland, a distant friend or relatives house, participate in that joy-inducing yoga marathon we’ve been dreaming about scheduling, or sample the wares and learn something about food at the Raw Living Expo this weekend.

While we’ve got the game on (or not), take the time to backup the hard drives, pay the bills, or make any pertinent plans, since the next Mercury Retrograde cycle is on its way. While we may bemoan the technological glitches and hiccups that seem to accompany this particular energetic field, it is also important to remember that this particular cycle is beloved for its ability to allow us to reorganize, to edit (I love this part of the cycle), to complete, to compromise. Starting new endeavors in Mercury Retrograde is not ideal, yet this opportunity to wrap things up and organize our lives is just as important as the need we may feel to jump in to new opportunities.

Speaking of embracing what is, we received photos from NAAM Yoga’s Superclass in Mexico City. Talk about the Superbowl of Yoga, seeing thousands gather to celebrate and practice together is a powerful inspiration and an image we can evoke to remind ourselves that we are not alone when we practice: we share a commitment with people we’ve never even met. It’s not unlike our shared loyalty to our team; whether we’re rooting for the Broncos or the Seahawks, we have an affinity for those in our chosen colored jerseys on the field or cheering on the team. (As a 10-year resident of Colorado, I’ve personally been indoctrinated as a fan of the Denver home team.) In any case, we’re all on the same team when it comes to believing in and cheering on our commitment to the practice of Yoga. May we celebrate it well.

Animals in Need: Meet Petunia

Petunia is a one year old adorable purebred Pekingese that was rescued after she was attacked by another dog and the owners could not afford to take her to the vet.

Sadly, she had to lose one of her eyes, but Petunia seems completely unaffected by the loss. She is sweet, spunky and loving. She is good with other dogs and fine with cats and would do well in a home with another playful dog. She would also make a great family dog.

Petunia is now spayed, microchipped and is current on all shots. If you are interested in Petunia please email or stop by The Forgotten Dog Foundation’s Sunday Adoption Events which are held every Sunday morning.
The Forgotten Dog Foundation distinguishes itself by committing to using a foster-based boarding solution for our rescued dogs, rather than caging them in facilities, so that they may be rehabilitated in a loving home environment.

Interested in sponsoring our pet adoption section? Call 310-306-1785.

Film Festivals: From Sundance to Santa Barbara

Last Saturday in Park City at the 30th anniversary of theSundance Film Festival, awards were presented for jury-selected and audience-selected films. ‘Whiplash’, a dark drama about a young jazz drummer won both categories. Women had a strong presence this year, with twenty four women directing, co-directing or writing films, including winners Tracy Droz Tragos for ‘Rich Hill’ and Effie T. Brown for ‘Dear White People‘.

Strong documentaries have premiered at Sundance in recent years, including last year’s Oscar winner, ‘Searching for Sugarman‘. Four of the five films nominated for the upcoming Oscars came out of the 2013 festival. Expect the same to be true next year!

This weekend is the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. One film to look for is ‘Gurukalam‘. In vivid and sensuous detail, ‘Gurukulam’ follows a group of students and their teacher as they confront fundamental questions about the nature of reality and self-identity at a remote forest ashram in southern India. The film is screening both Sunday, Feb 2 and Monday, Feb 3. See the entire schedule for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Astrology: Mercury In Retrograde, Do You Know Where Your Cell Phone Is?

At the beginning of the month, plan for the Mercury retrograde cycle by getting your technological affairs in order.

Personal strength versus compromise with others will become an issue for more than a month, starting February 4 when Mars enters Libra, until March 25. Mars is the planet of asserting our individuality, and Libra is the sign of compromise. To make things more tricky, Mars will go retrograde in Libra during this time. There could be a lot of turmoil in all relationships (including business ones) as you calibrate the proper balance between self-will and compromise—honoring your needs and respecting others.
