Actually, they have a rather large manufacturing presence in North America, and it's growing with the official opening of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi, which just began producing the Toyota Corolla. The new plant represents a continued investment from Toyota in the U.S. economy, which is a bold and smart move, especially when so many companies continue to send jobs overseas.
"Mississippi has provided us with a great workforce who welcomes challenges and are eager to learn," explains Masafumi Hamaguchi, president of TMMMS. "Our slogan is: 'Always look for the best way, using our pioneer spirit.' The Mississippi workforce has shown that they have this spirit."1
At its core, this move really shows a continued investment in the U.S. economy. After all, Toyota produces the parts for the Corolla right here in the United States as well. For instance, the engines for the Corolla are made in Buffalo WV, while the cylinder heads and blocks are made at factories in Troy, MO and Jackson, TN.
"Building vehicles where we sell them helps us be even closer to our customers," Akio Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corporation President explained during the plant's opening. "The U.S. market remains a key to Toyota's overall success, and Toyota Mississippi will play an important role for us here."1
