A number of LawFuel “Power List” members feature in the latest Chambers & Partners’ New Zealand law rankings, which are also dominated by the “golden triangle” firms: Russell McVeagh, Chapman Tripp and Russell McVeagh.

Chambers’ ranking span 185 jurisdictions with four, broad bands – number 1 being the top level with the rankings sorted by Chambers’ contact with firms and lawyers intended to prevent payment for ranking success for the Chambers Asia-Pacific Guide.

This year’s guide saw the total number of New Zealand law firms and lawyers ranked increase  from 28 to 32 and 314 to 330 respectively, but it also showed some firms such as Dundas Street Employment Lawyers and Thompson Blackie Biddles receiving ranking from the ranks of the boutique practices.

Bell Gully.  Bell Gully last year was the only firm with a one ranking for 10 lawyers, but Chapman Tripp this year took the top position with 238 ranked lawyers compared to Bell Gully’s .

The full New Zealand comparison guide can be seen here.

Minter Ellison Rudd Watts gained three new band one rankings to take its total to four, with the firm making the most progress at the top end of the tables since having no band one rankings in 2014.

Women in Law.  Chambers and Partners says the number of ranked female lawyers increased by 10 this year, taking the total to 65, which shows a “remarkable rise in recognition.”

Dundas Street’s Susan Hornby-Geluk was ranked Band 2 and the firm Band 3.

The group with the highest proportion of ranked female lawyers were employment law (37.5 per cent), shipping law (38.4 per cent) and investment funds (40 per cent).

Among the “Power Lawyers” from our own list who made the rankings were John Strowger of Chapman Tripp, Pip Greenwood from Chapman Tripp and Cathy Quinn from Minter Ellison Rudd Watts.

The employment (37.5%), shipping (38.46%), and investment funds (40%) practice areas have the greatest proportion of ranked female lawyers.

Investment funds was added to the New Zealand rankings table this year because of the growth in the number of funds under management “and the increasing need to consider investment funds as a discrete practice area.”

In the key sections, three lawyers achieved star ratings for exceptional recommendations in their field – Dave Wetherell of Mayne Wetherell (banking and finance), Gavin Macdonald of Bell Gully (corporate and commercial), and John Strowger of Chapman Tripp (corporate and commercial).

Among the boutiques receiving special mention in the corporate and commercial arena were Mayne Wetherell, Webb Henderson, Harmos Horton Lusk and Lowndes Law.

The up and coming lawyers included Michael Gartshore, Webb Henderson, David Hoare, Russell McVeagh and Toby Sharpe, Bell Gully.
