Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Director and Superintendent of the Virginia State Police sadly reports the death of Trooper Chad Dermyer.

Trooper Dermyer, 37, was at the Greyhound Bus Station in Richmond, participating in a drug interdiction training exercise. Following the training, Trooper Dermyer made contact with individuals as they entered the bus station. Trooper Dermyer made contact with a male just inside the entrance to the Bus Station, for reasons that are not known, the male suspect obtained a firearm from his waistband and shot Trooper Dermyer in the chest multiple times.

Troopers that were nearby and observed the confrontation, returned gunfire striking the suspect. Trooper Dermyer was transported to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center where he succumbed to his gunshot wounds during surgery. The suspect was also transported to VCU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Virginia State Police is conducting the investigation of the shooting and are being assisted by the Richmond City Police, FBI, ATF, US Marshal’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security.

Trooper Dermyer graduated from the State Police Academy in 2014 serving the Virginia State Police for one and one half years. Initially he was assigned to patrol duties in the Newport News and Hampton areas. He was currently assigned to a counter-terrorism and criminal interdiction unit. Trooper Dermyer is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He had previously served as a Police Officer with the Newport News Police Department. He is survived by his wife, Michelle, and two young children.

Two state troopers were among four people shot when gunfire broke out in a Virginia Greyhound bus station, according to reports out of Richmond Thursday afternoon. Four people were shot, including two state troopers, acording to a reporter for WRIC-TV. A woman and the suspect were also shot, the station reported.
