Award-winning poet Judith Rodriguez said, “I write poetry in order to live more fully.” During National Poetry Month, we encourage you to explore the ways that poetry can enrich your life. Whether you read poetry regularly, or don’t know a haiku from a limerick, take some time to celebrate National Poetry Month. Here are some ideas:

Check out a live poetry reading in your area. The Academy of American Poets website has a list of readings happening this month around the country.

Participate in the Dear Poet Project, which encourages students to connect with a poet by writing a letter with questions or thoughts they have after reading a particular poem.

Listen to recordings of Americans (everyone from students to a former President) reading their favorite poems.

Check out the Poetry Idea Engine, a fun online activity for elementary and middle school students.

Celebrate Poem In Your Pocket Day on April 18th by carrying your favorite poem in your pocket to share with people you meet throughout the day.

As we welcome spring in many parts of the country, it’s the perfect time to honor the ways that poetry can help us to see things in new and different ways. As Robert Penn Warren wrote, “How do poems grow? They grow out of your life.”
