L’Histoire du Soldat  is a gem of early 20th century classical music.

Eko Supriyanto, Sri Qadariatin, Martinus Miroto and Jamaluddin Latif

Stravinsky wrote this visionary, demanding work during the postwar crisis in 1918 for a group of poor, unemployed artists and musicians. As a traveling theater production, it is one of a kind. The libretto was inspired by an old Russian legend of a soldier who sold his soul (violin) to the devil. An indictment against the corrupting power of money. Through this production Stravinsky broke for the first time with Russian music and was influenced by new music from his time such as Jazz and Tango. This piece belongs to the series masterpieces such as the Firebird, Les Noces, Petrouchka and Le Sacre du Printemps. Stravinsky intended this interdisciplinary production to be a compact and mobile performance able to travel around the world and using the local cultural context. An Eskimo version exists.

A Javanese version of this new L’Histoire was created in July 2011 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for prominent Javanese dancers with a live chamber orchestra. This caused a fully booked tour through Javanese theaters evoking standing ovations. The dynamic choreography directed by theatermaker Gerard Mosterd who works twelve years annually as a choreographer, teacher and producer in South East Asia uses the Javanese court dance vocabulary within a subtle, abstract, contemporary setting. It was developed in collaboration with renowned performers from Indonesia. Never before has such complex Stravinsky music been interpreted by Javanese dancers who are traditionally masters of slow and refined movement.

The Faust-like story, originally written in 1918 by Ramuz, is spiced up with humor and spoken live in Indonesian, the old text is replaced by a a more compact and contemporary edition.

The choreography doesn’t follow a narrative line.

Eko Supriyanto & Martinus Miroto, By: Dadang Pribadi

Two internationally famed Javanese star dancers interpret the surreal piece; Martinus Miroto and Eko Supriyanto. Both are renowned for their collaboration with director Peter Sellars, and Opera Jawa filmmaker Garin Nugroho. Supriyanto toured with pop icon Madonna and Samoan director Lemi Ponifasio. Actress Sri Qadariatin and actor Jamaluddin Latif are prominent members of the avant garde theater group Teater Garasi in Yogyakarta. Qadariatin has performed worldwide in I La Galigo and Persephone by Bob Wilson.
