The inaugural Draft A Celebrity Golf Championship, benefiting the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center & the Lowcountry Food Bank, will be played Feb. 15 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Ocean Course.
Participants will bid online for draft position to play with a list of celebrities in that range from South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier to Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson. Once the bidding process ends, the team with the highest bid will have the No. 1 selection.
Also committed to play are former NFL players Brian Dawkins, George Rogers, Jerome Bettis, Kordell Stewart & Joe Delamielleure, well-known coaches Chad Morris, Fisher DeBerry, Ralph Friedgen & Bobby Cremins, former NBA all-star Eric “Sleepy” Floyd, actress Catherine Bell, actor Bill Murray & musician Eric Bass.
Former Furman & Vanderbilt head football coach Bobby Johnson chairs the board of directors for the first-year tournament.

Ford-Picard Junior
Jacqueline Twitty & Jeff Twitty Gibbs of Chapin captured the Parent-Child Division with a score of 67, while Jaelyn Tindal of Rock Hill shot a 1-over 73 to win the overall individual title in the 20th annual yearly Ford Picard Parent Christmas Classic junior golf tournament played at the Links Course at Wild Dunes Resort.
Tindal won the girls’ 14-18 age group in the Ford portion of the tournament by three shots over Kelli Murphy & Brandi Hammonds, who both shot 76s. Twitty finished fourth at 77 & Jodee Tindal was fifth at 80. Anna Grace Brock won the girls’ 13-under division with a score of 43. Zachary Herold beat Bryson Nimmer in a playoff for the boys’ 13-18 age group after both players shot 75. Carson Mudger & Justin Hood tied for third at 76. Wilson Yearout & Jake Smith tied for fifth at 78. John Flintom won the boys’ 12-under age group with a score of 36. Drayton Stewart was 2nd with a 40, followed by Johnny Velasquez, 43; Jack Wofford, 44; & Trace Guyton, 51.
Other winners in the Picard Parent-Child portion of the tournament were: First – John M. Flintom-Michael Flintom, 77; Second – Emily Dunlap-Billy Dunlap, 81; & Third – Derek Loy-Richard Loy, 78.
The tournament honors two Charleston golfing legends, the late Frank Ford who was a seven-time S.C. Amateur champion & the late Henry Picard, a World Golf Hall of Fame professional who won the 1938 Masters & 1939 PGA Championship.
S.C. Golf Hall of Fame
Karen Ferree of Hilton Head & the late George Cobb, a well-known golf course architect, will be the 2013 inductees in to the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame on Jan. 11 at Columbia Country Club.
Ferree will be joining her husband Jim Ferree in the hall of fame. Ferree, who has won Carolinas, Junior, Senior & Women’s Four-Ball titles, is a two-time Women’s S.C. Golf Association stroke-play winner & three-time WSCGA match-play champion. She moreover has won the WSCGA Senior Championship five times.
Cobb is credited with more than 200 designs & re-designs of courses throughout the country & designed Augusta National’s Par-3 Course.
Charleston Golf Week
The inaugural Charleston Golf Week will coincide with Charleston Restaurant Week with many area courses offering reduced rates. “Appetizer” courses contain Coosaw Creek, Dunes West, Charleston National, Stono Ferry, Wild Dunes Harbor, Legend Oaks & Wescott. “Entree” courses are RiverTowne & Charleston National. Charles Tilghman Junior
Several area golfers had top-10 finishes at the recent Charles Tilghman Junior Championship played at the Surf Golf & Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach. Dwight Cauthen of Columbia was the overall boys champion with a two-round total of 138. Austin Zoller of Summerville finished in a tie for sixth at 144 & tied for third in the boys’ 17-18 age group. Kyle Spencer of Mount Pleasant tied for eighth in the boys’ 15-16 age group with a 148 total. Annika Bovender of Mount Pleasant was 10th overall in the girls’ division with a score of 157 & moreover 10th in the girls’ 16-18 age group. Kate Harper of Isle of Palms was 2nd in the girls’ 13-15 age group with a score of 159.
SCGA honors
The South Carolina Golf Association will present the following honors during SCGA Golf Day activities on Jan. 11 at Columbia Country Club. Todd White of Hilton Head, who qualified for the 2013 Walker Cup Matches, is the player of the year while Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill is the senior player of the year. The U.S. Golf Association is the Tom Fazio Service to Golf Award winner; Doug Smith of Spartanburg is the Charlie Drawdy Distinguished Service Award recipient; & the Country Club of Lexington is the SCGA Club of the Year.
Rules seminar
The Carolinas Golf Association is holding 15 free (no cost) USGA Rules of Golf seminars throughout the Carolinas, in addition to one March 12 at Wescott Golf Club (5:30-7:30 p.m.). Participants are asked to pre-register at carolinasgolf.org.
