LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas NV urologist was indicted for giving false information about re-using single-use needle guides during medical procedures in that resulted in more than 100 of his patients being tested for HIV & hepatitis.

According to the federal grand jury indictment, the incidents took place from Dec. 20, 2010 to March 2011 during invasive prostate procedures.

Dr. Michael Kaplan claimed an medical equipment vendor told him he could re-use the needle guides three to five times. In March 2011, he took out a newspaper ad & even set up a website in an attempt to calm patients telling them he used high-level disinfection to clean the needle guides between patients.

The indictment states Kaplan is charged with one count of conspiracy for making false representations in the newspaper ad, making false representations to federal investigators & instructing his staff to reuse the needle guides. He is moreover charged with one count of false acknowledgment to a government agency.
