CHURCH TO OFFER BIBLE SCHOOL

Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4601 W. Lake Mead Blvd., invites children of all ages to a traditional vacation Bible school 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 22-26.

Bible schools contain songs, games, crafts & refreshments to teach simple lessons about living a Christian life. Children are divided in to classes with others approximately their age. NORTH LAS VEGAS NV ‘TORNADO’ MOSTLY HOT AIR

A tornado-like system caused damage to structures, destroyed a fireworks stand & uprooted 15 to 20 trees in North Las Vegas NV on July 2.

Firefighters were alerted around 11 p.m., according to Fire Department spokesman Cedric Williams.

“I talked to the - captain on duty last night, & he asserted he thought the - fire station’s roof was coming off,” Williams asserted Wednesday. “He asserted it sounded like a train landed on top of the - station.”

Missing roof tiles, power outages, vehicle damage & flying debris were reported from the - blocks surrounding the - intersection of Ann Road & Simmons Street, Williams said.

“We see in that quite a bit around here when thunderstorms develop & rain evaporates,” National Weather Service meteorologist Barry Pierce said. “The drier the - air is, the - quicker (evaporation) rises from the - surface. So once it hits the - surface, a release of wind can spread from the - base of the - ground.”

Similar systems, which Pierce called “microbursts,” are responsible for some of the - fiercest wind events ever recorded in the - Las Vegas NV Valley.

There were reports of minor injuries yet no transports to the - hospital.

BLM COLLECTING ENTRIES THROUGH SEPTEMBER FOR PHOTO CONTEST

The Bureau of Land Management is celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, by looking for photos in that highlight residents’ adventures & activities on public lands & historic sites.

Winning photos will be featured in the - BLM NV 2014 planner & on the - BLM NV web & social media sites & could appear on BLM’s national social media sites.

Photos will be selected from the - following categories: Adventure & Outdoor Recreation; Historical & Cultural; Scenic, Seasons & Landscapes; & Animals. Photo must have been taken between Jan. 1, 2011, & Sept. 30, 2013. Contest entries will be accepted up to Sept. 30. Winners are to be formally announced Oct. 31.

NEVADA CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION PLANS CAMP CARTWHEEL FOR JULY

Registration is open for the - NV Childhood Cancer Foundation’s 17th annual yearly Camp Cartwheel Summer Camp for critically ill children & their siblings, planned for July 17-20 & 24-27 at Torino Ranch in Lovell Canyon, about 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The event is a medically supervised, outdoor & overnight camp experience for children diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.

The free (no cost) camp includes five days of swimming, scuba diving, arts & crafts, canoeing & outdoor games for more than 190 campers, ages 5-17.

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN OPEN OFFERS FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open offers the - possibility for local charities & schools to raise funds for their programs by selling daily ticket vouchers to the - 2013 tournament, scheduled for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle.

By selling tickets to the - annual yearly PGA tournament through the - Tickets for Charity & Tickets for Schools programs, organizations retain 100 % of the - proceeds. Participating organizations can contain parent-teacher associations, sports clubs, academic clubs & local nonprofits.

Last year’s program raised more than $30,000 to support more than 30 local nonprofits in addition to assisting more than 25 school systems to defeat budget cuts. Merryhill School’s parent-teacher organization led the - participating schools last year in raising $2,700 for their programs. Additionally, the - International Public Safety Leadership & Ethics Institute sold more than 300 tickets to the - tournament to raise $3,220.

HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA LAUNCHES BOTTLED WATER PROGRAM FOR HOMELESS

HELP of Southern NV invites the - community to be part of its HELP2O campaign, which donates bottled water to the - homeless.

Patrons can donate water at any Las Vegas-area Whole Foods Market through Aug. 31. For every bottle of Real Water brand purchased at Whole Foods Market during the - campaign, the - Nevada-based Real Water company will donate a bottle of Real Water.

Collection points for donated water include: Whole Foods Fort Apache, 8855 W. Charleston Blvd.; Whole Foods Tenaya, 7250 W. Lake Mead Blvd.; Whole Foods Town Square, 6689 Las Vegas NV Blvd. South; & Whole Foods Henderson, 100 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Bottled water donations can be purchased in-store & donated or purchased elsewhere & dropped off. The water will be collected on a normal basis & distributed to area homeless.

Additionally, monetary donations can be made with HELP of Southern NV alter jars at all four Whole Foods Market locations or by submitting a donation through the - nonprofit’s website at helpsonv.org.

The NV chapter of the - Community Associations Institute is accepting nominations for individuals & charities statewide for its annual yearly Ordinary People Extraordinary Measures Awards. MDA SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR AUGUST CAMP

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for volunteer counselors & medical professionals to care for children with muscular dystrophy & related diseases at the - Southern NV MDA Summer Camp, slated for Aug. 4-10 at Apple Canyon Center in Mountain Center, Calif.

Volunteer counselors must be at least 16. Campers’ ages range from 6 to 17. Each counselor is a companion to an MDA camper, helping with camp activities (sports, horseback riding, arts & crafts, etc.) & day-to-day activities (eating, bathing & dressing).

Also, the - association is looking for physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists & other medical professionals to volunteer for the - camp’s medical staff. Medical staff members supervise & maintain the - health & well-being of all camp participants.
