After faltering briefly during the second round of qualifying at the 2016 International Training and Research Center Super Senior Classic, Ron Mohr of North Las Vegas, Nevada, was able to snap back into form and again see his name at the top of the standings at Sam’s Town Bowling Center.

The 60-year-old right-hander and opening-round leader regained his momentum during his final four games Saturday, averaging more than 249 down the stretch to remain in the lead with a 3,700 total through 16 games of qualifying.

“I just couldn’t get into tournament mode,” said Mohr, who led Friday’s first round with a 1,860 eight-game total and nearly matched that effort with 1,840 on Saturday. “My thoughts would wander, and my focus wasn’t very good until I missed a 10 pin in the fourth game, which is inexcusable. I struck on the next five shots after that, and I was fortunate to be able get my focus back and reset to finish better than I started.”

United States Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia of Jackson, New Jersey, shot 289 in his final game to move into second place with a 3,617 total, while Japan’s Junichi Yajima is third with 3,599. Ronald Holt of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and Sam Carter of Ben Lomond, California, round out the top five with 3,536 and 3,526, respectively.

After Saturday’s second round of qualifying, the field at the 2016 ITRC Super Senior Classic was cut from 126 competitors to the top 32 players, who will return to the lanes Sunday at 11 a.m. Eastern to bowl four additional games to determine the top five for the stepladder finals, based on the 20-game pinfall totals.

Defending champion Sam Maccarone of Blackwood, New Jersey, advanced to Sunday’s cashers’ round, qualifying 22nd with 3,302. USBC Hall of Famer Tom Baker of King, North Carolina, earned the final spot in the cashers’ round with a 3,237 total, a 202.3 average.

Baker finished as runner-up to Maccarone at the 2015 Super Senior Classic in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Mohr now will look to retain his spot at the top of the standings through the cashers’ round in hopes of earning the top seed for the stepladder finals. The top seed would need just one win to capture the title and top prize of $6,500.

“I’m really going to work on keeping my head in the game,” said Mohr, a two-time PBA50 Tour Player of the Year. “Earning the No. 1 seed is my objective. The more the lanes burn up, the better my shot picks up, so I wouldn’t mind seeing a few games ahead of me.”

The cashers’ round and stepladder finals of the 2016 Super Senior Classic will be broadcast live on BOWL.com’s BowlTV.

The 2016 Super Senior Classic featured the top super seniors age 60 and older.
