Creating Hawaii-Inspired Quilts by author Judith Sandstrom embraces early 19th-century Hawaiian quilts using bright, solid-colored fabric. Hwaiian women would fold a large piece of fabric into quarters or eighths and cut flowing motifs symbolic of their lush environment. The practice of using a single piece of solid-color fabric hand-appliquéd onto a white background became their tradition― a tradition that both inspired and stimulated the author when creating her own designs.

There is the history, a full color pictorial, 26 patterns and easy-to-follow directions, learn to cut and stitch both hand- and machine-appliquéd blocks. Projects include Hawaiian Seas wall quilts, Hawaiian Christmas with four blocks, and various flowers and sea creatures. The designs begin with single color, appliquéd blocks and progress to blocks adorned with additional colors and motifs.

As a designer of quilts and fabric crafts for the past 20 years, Sandstrom has had over 100 original designs published in various books and magazines. She has demonstrated products for craft manufacturers at professional shows and in stores, and has designed quilts to introduce new fabric lines. Quilt designs run the gamut from miniature paper pieced wall quilts to intricate hand appliquéd bed quilts. Rotary cutting and quick piecing are her methods of choice for quilt construction, although she prefers to complete her projects with hand quilting whenever possible. Sandstrom loves to combine two different blocks to create a totally new design.

As she has stated, “As a long time quilt enthusiast and designer, I have been mystically drawn to the traditional Hawaiian quilts. I enjoy the symmetry, the lovely botanical shapes, the close echo quilting, and the lyrical quality they possess. I attempt in no way to equal their majestic splendor, but rather to draw inspiration from them.”
