(Laredo, Tx)-United ISD’s school counselors attended a Professional Development session on February 4th at the District’s SAC meeting rooms. A segment of the assembly was dedicated to thanking the counselors for the work they do. Councilman Alex Perez (District 3), recited the 2015 National School Counseling Week proclamation. “I am here on behalf of Mayor Pete Saenz, who congratulates and thanks all UISD counselors for their devotion and positive impact on the lives of students”, said Perez. National School Counseling Week is celebrated nationally from Feb. 2–6.

The week focuses public attention on the unique contributions of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students lives are enhanced as a result of their work.

The theme of this year’s Counseling Week is Celebrate School Counseling, which spotlights the contributions of counselors and the tremendous impact they have in helping students achieve academic success and plan for a career. Counselors also work closely with parents to remove barriers to students’ academic performance and find positive ways to enhance students’ social/emotional development. At present, United ISD has 34 elementary school counselors, 25 middle school counselors, and 37 high school counselors, 1 counselor at the District’s alternative campus, STEP, 5-licensed chemical dependency counselors, 1-migrant counselor and 4-intinerant counselors.
