Thredbo’s Pump Track
If you haven’t been to Thredbo for a summer holiday then you could be excused for thinking that there is not much more happening than a chairlift ride and a walk out to Australia’s Highest peak. That fact is that the Christmas School Holidays in Thredbo are jumping with healthy outdoor family action that will make a holiday here something to remember. With so many indoor distractions nowadays for kids it is great find a place where getting outdoors and busy is cool and kids want to be involved.
Of course there are all of the classic activities on offer in Thredbo over the Summer Holidays, amazing walking trails along fresh mountain rivers, bike paths and pump tracks for the kids, there is the Thredbo Bobsled run, a kilometre long ride that kids and adults love and then the Thredbo Leisure Centre with the 50 metre heated pool with water slide and the Mission Inflatable obstacle course.
From December 27th to January 4th the Thredbo Summer Kids Festival is on with daytime and nighttime fun activities for the family. Street performers, games, bike riding workshops, face painting, dance workshops, fireworks and night time adventures make this festival a blast for everyone. Running throughout the school holidays on selected nights is the “Kids Night Adventure” This is a kids only event that gets them out under the stars playing games, spotlighting for wildlife and getting in touch with the Australian Bush, all while Mum and Dad crack a bottle of “Kids Free” pinot grigio at one of Thredbo’s lovely restaurants. Speaking of which, if your are going to be in Thredbo on January 6,7 or 8, then Chef Jean Michel Gerst from Thredbo’s Knickerbocker Restaurant will be running the Knickerbocker Kids Kitchen. These 2 hour sessions give kids the basics in cooking skills before the cook their own gourmet lunch.
Swimming in the Thredbo River
For older kids Thredbo is one giant playground. With secret swimming holes in the Alpine Ash forests of Merrit’s Nature trail, the Mountain Bike Pump Track, and the long flowing downhill ride on the 19km long Thredbo Valley Trail (TVT) Thredbo has plenty of adrenaline charged fun for the tweenagers. The TVT offers kids a taste of the Alpine environment combined with the fun of bike riding beside the pristine Thredbo River. Thredbo run tours with a one way ride on the TVT and a pick up at the other end. For more adventurous bike riders there is the Kosciuszko Flow Trail offering a a real taste of downhill mountain bike riding from the top of the chairlift.
Of course there are plenty of other activities on offer in summer in the mountains including, trout fishing in the river, swimming in the beautiful pools along the river, canoeing and sailing on Lake Jindabyne and a months worth of beautiful picnic spots.
The great news for families in Thredbo is that many of the activities in the Kids Festival are free and Thredbo has the Kids Play Free offer for most of the others. This means that for each paying adult on most activities one child goes free. You can also buy a family pass for the price of 2 Adults which includes up to 3 children free. The news get even better for teenagers because the Kids Free offer applies for children up to 17 years old.
