En todo el mundo los beatlemaníacos recuerdan hoy el cumpleaños 73 de John Lennon (1940-1980) y visitan sitios donde dejó huella, mientras aquí en La Habana, capital de Cuba, bandas de rock se reúnen para cantar sus canciones.
Roqueros de la vieja guardia y la más joven generación dedicarán su tributo musical al autor de Imagine en el habanero Submarino Amarillo, cercano al parque donde está ubicada la estatua de Lennon, obra del cubano José Villa Soberón.
Los grupos Miel con limón, La vieja escuela, Challenger y el proyecto Lissy interpretarán varios de los éxitos compuestos por Lennon como Give Pace a Chance, Come together, Get back y I wan to hold your hand.
También tocarán varios hits de The Beatles pero con sonoridades más contemporáneas según la línea melódica de cada uno, explicó el director de Miel con limón, Wilfredo Gatell.
Esa agrupación de estudiantes universitarios amantes del buen rock debe, en cierta medida, su primer trabajo “serio” al compositor británico, pues debutaron en la escena cubana con la obra teatral La historia de Juan Lennon.
Para el director del proyecto Challenger, Ángel Luis Fundichell, el espectáculo parece un sueño hecho realidad: “hace 20 años era impensable realizar en La Habana un homenaje a Lennon y ahora hay espacios como el Submarino Amarillo donde se divulgan su temas”.
El noruego Steinar Seland, quien echó raíces en esta isla y apostó por el rock con su banda La vieja escuela, dijo que casi toda la música pop recibe influencia de The Beatles, a veces sin saberlo.
Precisamente, Lennon y Paul McCartney compusieron muchos de los temas más populares del cuarteto de Liverpool y solo necesitaban una o dos horas para hacerlo.
John Winston Lennon nació el 9 de octubre de 1940 y muchos lo consideran el líder de The Beatles, el principal responsable de su surgimiento en 1960 y también de su separación a finales de esa década.
Después de la disolución del grupo, estuvo un tanto alejado de los escenarios hasta que volvió a la palestra pública con el álbum Double fantasy, pero la alegría de su regreso duró poco: el 8 de diciembre de 1980 un fanático le disparó en un barrio de Nueva York.
Dicen que Yoko Ono, su controversial musa, esparció las cenizas del cantante en un campo en las afueras de Liverpool para que su alma esté en “Strawberry fields forever”, como era su deseo.
