Laguna failed to capitalize on a number of opportunities and in an overtime loss to Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana last Friday, Oct. 31, at Guyer Field. Fans that missed the game due to a threat of rain or Halloween activities missed an exciting contest that went to an extra period.
After an exchange of opening touchdowns, both teams settled into a defensive battle that appeared over in the second period when the Breakers drove 58 yards in 10 plays only to stall on the one-yard line as Matt Hayes was stopped short on fourth down.
Calvary came right back for their own 58-yard try in 10 plays, but were forced to punt with just three minutes remaining.
Breakers got a break when Jack Simon connected with a wide open Brett Tracy for a 64-yard play to the Calvary 19. Four plays later Nick Krantz scored and with Max Casper’s kick the Breakers were up 14-7 at the intermission.
Laguna took the second half kickoff and appeared poised to add to their lead but stalled after 11 plays and just missed a 40-yard field goal attempt as the ball bounced off the left inside of the goal post.
During Calvary’s ensuing possession, Brett Tracy was hurt and the Laguna defense seemed unsettled after play finally resumed. Two plays later Calvary took advantage of a confused Laguna team scoring on a 49-yard run.
Breakers went only 28-yards on their next possession still not recovered from the Tracy injury and timeout. Calvary again took possession and closed out the quarter on a 40-yard pass play to go up 21-14.
Quarterback Jake Simon ran for 75 yards on 11 carries.
Breakers finally regrouped and took the kickoff to start the fourth period to the Calvary 12, where they then executed an 88-yard drive culminating in Nick Krantz’s third touchdown of the evening to tie the game at 21. Once again Calvary struck with a big play, taking the kickoff 93 yards to the Laguna three. Three plays later, Breakers were down 7.
Still the Breakers came back. Matt Hayes returned the kickoff 35 yards and Laguna runners pounded out the yards in seven runs, but then caught a break with a dead-ball penalty from the Eagles that gave them possession on the 15. Jack Simon found Kyle McCombs open in the end-zone and the contest was tied with 2:56 remaining.
Calvary tried to get into field goal range, but the Breakers forced three straight incomplete passes to turn the possession over to Laguna in the midfield with just under a minute remaining.
Breakers moved 28 yards in the final seconds, but Max Casper’s field goal attempt was blocked and Calvary ran the errant ball back over 60-yards towards the Breaker goal-line only to finally be caught by a sprinting Jack Simon at the Laguna nine-yard line as time expired.
In the OT, played like college rules, Calvary scored in seven plays giving Laguna a chance to tie.
Breakers moved 13 yards to the Calvary 12, but Jack Simon’s pass to the end-zone was intercepted ending the game.
Laguna has one more try to avoid a winless league season when they host Godinez on Friday, Nov. 7 at Guyer Field. The Grizzlies are 0-9 on the season and like Laguna have had a number of close games.
