It's perhaps the world's most celebrated craft beer bar.
As if the craft beer scene in Los Angeles couldn’t be any hotter right now, here comes Mikkeller Bar. Part taproom, part home for experimental brews from around the globe, part homage to the Copenhagen brewery that bears its name, Mikkeller Bar is an international phenomenon that’s practically unparalleled in the beer world — and it’s landing Downtown.
Owner Chuck Stilphen, who brought Mikkeller Bar to San Francisco back in 2013, tells Eater exclusively that he’ll be collaborating once again with Mikkeller owner Mikkel Borg Bjergsø to bring a full-on restaurant and taphouse to the former Discount Tire Center building on the corner of Olympic and Olive. That site’s been vacant since at least 2007, but retains much of its original 1916 bones, which should make for a pretty exciting build-out.
The process, paperwork-permitting, should take anywhere from nine months to a year. When finished, expect Mikkeller Bar LA to run both lunch and dinner service, as well as operate a morning coffee bar and a full bar in the evenings. There’s going to be room for 50 craft beer taps (some even set to pour at different temperatures), along with a reserve bottle list for the discerning beer drinker to enjoy.
Ultimately the property should be pretty unique to L.A., but keep many of the same facets as the San Francisco operation, as well as the global span of Mikkeller Bar concepts, which currently operate everywhere from Copenhagen to Reykjavik, Iceland to Seoul, South Korea.
