Nothing against beer, brats, parties, a day off and “low low sale prices” on everything from cars to beds, but this is a hallowed holiday. San Diego is a military town. Those young men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice would want us to have fun with our friends and families but I hope we all pause for a few minutes and remember those who gave all for their country.

Tomorrow night, Saturday May 24, it’s the “5th Annual American Freedom Festival aboard the USS Midway. This is such a great event and KyXy is proud to have been part of the previous four. Proceeds benefit active military, veterans and their families. I get to introduce this year’s entertainment, World Class Rockers, featuring former members of Journey, Santana, Boston, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steppenwolf. Bring a warm jacket or sweater. It’s gets chilly on the Midway’s flight deck. Here’s more information.

Speaking of the Midway, The USS Midway Museum is the heart and soul of Memorial Day celebration in San Diego. The Memorial Day lineup of activities aboard the Midway honors and remembers our heroes as it celebrates our military heritage. Weekend activities and events offer the community an affordable and inspiring way to kick off summer in San Diego. Click HERE to see what’s happening.

Who doesn’t love a parade? We’ve got a great one on Monday morning in one of my all-time favorite neighborhoods, Kensington! The Kensington Parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Monday on Marlborough Avenue, from Ridgeway Drive to Adams Avenue. The price is right. It’s free!

Hillcrest is proud to play an important part of our Memorial Day weekend in San Diego. The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Benjamin F. Dillingham and Bridget Wilson LGBT Veterans Wall of Honor Committee will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Hillcrest Pride Flag on Monday, May 26 at 3 pm. The entire community is welcome to the event, to honor those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The Hillcrest Pride Flag will be flying a United States flag that day.

Not only is San Diego a military town, we have a rich “Old West” heritage and that’s certainly true in Valley Center. Head back to the Old West at this festival that has pie-eating contests, cowboy and cowgirl costume contests, a parade and a rodeo. It’s Valley Center Western Days 4 to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Valley Center Community Center, 28246 Lilac Road, Valley Center. Yeehaa!

I love Middle Eastern food and there will be plenty of that at the 11th Annual Lebanese Festival at St. Ephrem Maronite Catholic Churc today through Sunday. You’ll feast on Traditional Authentic Lebanese Dishes, like Tabbouleh, Hummus, Kabob, Stuffed Grape Leaves, and a wide assortment of Gourmet Sweets. Along with the Exquisite Lebanese Food there will be Music, Dancing, Hookah Bar, Carnival Games, Kids Activities and Valuable Raffle Prizes. Save some grape leaves for me.

How ‘bout some baseball under the sun? Petco Park transforms into a kid wonderland before Sunday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. Show up before the game and you’ll find bounce houses, stilt walkers, face painters, baseball clinics and more.1:10 p.m. Sunday. Petco Park. Free with admission. It’s KidsFest

Are you up for some jazz this weekend? It’s San Diego’s Jazz Festival featuring Maxwell, Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, Charlie Wilson, Mint Condition and more. It’s happening 4:15 p.m. Friday; 11:30 a.m. Saturday; noon Sunday. Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, 2100 Costa Del Mar Road, Carlsbad.
