A new Miss USA had been crowned. Yesterday, the country was graced with the announcement of who will take on the crown and the duties that come with being Miss USA. Miss Nevada, Nia Sanchez, was named to the honorary position at the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Did you know that this lovely woman has a connection to Sacramento?

As US Weekly is reporting, Miss Nevada took away the coveted crown and title last night. Sanchez was able to beat out some tough competition from the finalists, like Miss North Dakota, Miss Florida and Miss Iowa, among others. She will go on to represent the United States at the 2014 Miss Universe competition in the fall.

Sanchez was competing as Miss Nevada, but she is actually a local to Sacramento. If you check out her Wikipedia page or do a little research, you’ll learn that the newest Miss USA was born on February 16, 1990 right here in the River City. When she was seven years old, Sanchez moved to Las Vegas with her family. The interesting parts of her life don’t stop with her local connection either.

When she was six, Sanchez’s mother and father divorced. This led to Sanchez living in a women’s shelter in Vegas with her mom. This experience really changed her perspective on life. “I relate to them on a personal level because I’ve been there myself,” Sanchez said about women living in shelters during the Miss USA competition. She was so profoundly changed by this experience that she volunteers at shelters on a regular basis. Sanchez is even a fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo and teaches the women living in the shelters self-defense.

Sanchez has been living an amazing life. She has won such titles as Miss Citrus Valley, Miss Hollywood USA, and was second runner-up in the Miss California Pageant. She even worked at Hong Kong Disneyland! Yeah, not just Disneyland but Hong Kong Disneyland. She clearly has not let past troubles ruin the rest of her life.

All that is left to say is congratulations, and Sacramento is rooting for you at the Miss Universe, Nia Sanchez!
