Regional Center for Border Health invited the community to their 18th annual Celebration of Life event at the Yuma Civic Center, Friday.

RCBH President and CEO, and Former State Senator Amanda Aguirre said it’s a special event to celebrate cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer.

The Celebration of Life event is organized by the Regional center for Border Health in support to the Yuma County Breast and Cervical Coalition, which helps decrease the likelihood of mortality for cancer survivors in Yuma County, by raising money through several events

This year the Celebration of Life event will featured cancer survivor and motivational speaker Doug Dvorak. He was diagnosed with skin cancer in May of 1998 and is in remission.

Dvorak told News 11 that he happened to be at the dermatologist picking up his wife when they found melanoma on his hand.

Dvorak said, “His family has been ravaged by cancer; his mom, dad and uncle. We buried a lot of family members, I too have cancer, fortunately I’m in recovery.”

Dvorak said it’s important to remember early detection and to wear sunscreen. He teaches people how to survive cancer with a positive attitude.

Aguirre said, “Awareness and raise consciousness, early screening and detection. We encourage everyone not to wait one second.”
