Whether you’re a new dog mom or seasoned pup parent, you’re likely making one of these major mistakes

New and seasoned pup parents do plenty to spoil their pups and show them just how much their loved, and their dog shows just how much they love them back. Sometimes we skip on some of the more important things that ensure our pups stay healthy and happy without realizing it. These small mistakes can really affect our pups, but we’ve got you covered.

To help avoid doggy drama, we’ve made a list of the top ten mistakes dog owners make and how to remedy them.

1. Not staying on top of ticks

Make sure to always check your dog for ticks after a hike. We all love sharing outdoor adventures with our pups, but sometimes we forget just how much they rut through the bushes and trees, along with what that might include. Ticks left unattended can cause a variety of diseases. Finding these buggers is relatively easy and can save you from huge problems down the road.

2. Procrastinating on prescriptions

Deworming your pup is essential to keeping them healthy. Regular prescriptions of heartworm medication, even checkups should be kept at a regular schedule despite a healthy appearance.

3. Forgetting to check for fleas

Check your pup regularly for fleas and watch for constant scratching. Fleas can set up shop pretty quickly and cause all kinds of sores for both your pup and you. What’s worse, is they can even nest in furniture like bedding and couches!

4. Getting them “fixed”

We knew this was coming… unless you have plans to have a litter of puppies, it’s important to spay or neuter your dog. Not only is this a benefit for their health, but this reduces aggression, territory marking and their great attempts at running away!

5. Everything in moderation

Do you like to eat? So do our pups and sometimes they won’t set themselves healthy servings. Allowing a dog to overeat is a common mistake many pup parents make. Dogs should only be given larger amount of food if they are especially active, even then their diet should be regulated according to serving suggestion on the food bag or from a local veterinarian.

6. A healthy dog is a happy dog

Keeping your dog active is a key part of keeping them healthy. The amount of activity needed varies by breed and size, but most vets recommend 30-60 minutes of activity a day. Taking them for walks, runs, playing fetch, or taking them on hikes is a good way to help them maintain a healthy weight and prevent joint issues and obesity.

7. Praise and play with your pup

Dogs love affection. Dogs can give you signs that they want to play or are bored. They will bring toys, bark, dig holes, or whine. Keep things interesting by playing fetch, tug of war, using Outward Hounds puzzle games, and getting them outdoors! This will keep you active and entertained too.

8. Getting them potty trained

Training your dog is essential to raising them. This needs to begin when our pups are, well, pups. It’s never too early to start training. Make sure to scold and praise your dog at the right time. Sometimes they can’t help it when their stomach is sick or that you had to stay light at the office and couldn’t let them out. When they go to potty outside, praise them. This takes patience and time, but they will learn! Consult a trainer or obedience school for advice and classes.

9. Bad to the bone

Giving a dog a bone isn’t always the safest choice. Bones from steaks or chicken seem like a tasty, natural choice for our dogs. The fact is that they can splinter when their chewed and cause all sorts of problems for your pups, which can lead to costly vet visits. Make sure to consult your vet on the best options.

10. Let’s get social

Socializing your pup is a key to raising them. The ideal socialization period usually starts before you’re even able to adopt your pup, which is at 8 weeks. When you get that new puppy, make sure to introduce them to tons of new faces: dogs of various breeds/sizes, friends, children, etc. The more positive experiences a dog has, the more behaved they will be in the long run. Statistics show they will be more friendly by doing this.
