The first week of the high school football season featured several high profile, non-district matchups.
5A power houses Cedar Park and Aledo opener Baylor’s new McLane Stadium in a matchup of top five 5A teams. The Timberwolves took a late lead only to see Aledo respond with the go-ahead score with 1:03 to play. Aledo – the top ranked 5A team in the preseason Associated Press poll – held on 21-17.
It was a debut and a homecoming for Westlake head coach Todd Dodge. But despite recovering a late onside kick, Westlake lost 17-14 to Southlake Carroll. Dodge was hired by Westlake in the offseason. He led Southlake Carroll to four state championships from 2000-2006.
With Iowa State quarterback commit Dom DeLira held out with an injury, Lake Travis lost to Midway 38-30.
Even a move up in classification to 6A hasn’t dampened the high hopes for Rouse, but the Raiders were unable to exact revenge on San Antonio Brennan, losing 30-7. Brennan eliminated Rouse in the 4A quarterfinals in 2013.
