Idle Hours
4824 North Vineland Avenue
Los Angeles
818 980 5600
And, what appeared to be a rather distressed, dilapidated barrel shaped building in North Hollywood is actually a Los Angeles landmark that his now completely restored after three years and is ready for you to stop by for a snack and a beverage. It’s the Idle Hour established in 1941.
Idle Hour’s thematic structural design, known as “Programmatic” architecture and one of the last remaining in L.A., is a throwback to the dawning of the city’s booming car culture. It originated as a response to the rise of the automobile in the 1940s, providing rapidly passing motorists a chance to instantly recognize buildings designed to reflect their operations. In order to be noticed as a taproom, Idle Hour resembled a whiskey barrel, while other quick-serve locations built up in the shapes of tea kettles, doughnuts, and other wildly oversized objects.
