Gayle Anderson was live in Pomona with a preview of the 62nd Annual CALIFORNIA RV SHOW, which begins Friday, October 10th and runs through Sunday, October 19th at the Los Angeles Fairplex in Pomona. Sponsored by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), this is the largest RV show in Southern California and longest running in the United States.
CALIFORNIA RV SHOW features over 1,200 class A, B and C RV models, travel trailers, 5th wheels, toyhaulers, campers and tents as well as the latest in RV products and accessories by 65 recreational vehicle manufacturers and 21 Southern California dealers. On Saturday, October 18th, CALIFORNIA RV SHOW will donate the day’s ticket sales to the Life Rocks Foundation, which helps support charitable causes ranging from childhood cancer and diabetes to military support and pet charities. Make sure to stop by the Bret Michaels Silent Auction in the Exhibitor Tent Booth H-16 where autographed guitars, hats and other items will be on sale. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Life Rocks Foundation. In addition, Bret Michaels will be onsite for a meet & greet on from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
RVIA will also host a new RV Spring show at Pomona on April 15-19, 2015, which will feature both new and used RV models. This is the time when RV manufacturers offer deals on last year’s models and dealers will display their best used models to earn your business.

Recreational vehicles have been in existence almost as long as automobiles. According to an article commemorating the centennial of the RV pubished in the Smithsonian Magazine, the first RV was Pierce-Arrow’s Touring Landau, which debuted at Madison Square Garden in 1910. The Landau had a back seat that folded into a bed, a chamber pot toilet and a sink that folded down from the back of the seat of the chauffeur, who was connected to his passengers via telephone. Camping trailers made by Los Angeles Trailer Works and Auto-Kamp Trailers also rolled off the assembly line in 1910.
While the popularity of RVs dampened as a result of the Depression, some people used travel trailers, which could be purchased for $500 to $1,000, as inexpensive homes. During World War II, many RV companies converted their products to wartime manufacturing, making units that served as mobile hospitals, prisoner transports and morgues since production had ceased for consumer use. After the war, returning Gis and their families favored RVs as an inexpensive way to vacation. This desire along with the burgeoning interstate highway system, spurred a second RV boom which lasted through the 1960s. In 1967, Winnebago began mass-producing five models of motor homes which sold for as little as $5,000.
RVs have evolved with advances in technology. Modern RVs have convection ovens, microwaves, garbage disposals, washers and dryers, king-size beds, heated baths and showers and satellite dishes. Only your budget limits the comforts of an RV. For more on the history of the RV, click HERE.
In spite of fluctuating gas prices and ownership costs, RVing is still a a more economical way to vacation. RV vacations offer greater savings than those taken using a personal car or airline, staying in a hotel, rental house or condominium, and eating in restaurants. A study prepared by PKF Consulting USA, a member of an international travel and consulting group, found that RV travel is 23-59% less expensive than other types of vacations for a family of four that owns an RV. “Empty-nester” couples also save 11-46% percent.
According to the RV Consumer Demographic Profile published in 2011 by the RVIA, the typical RVer was 48 years old in 2011, one year younger than the 49 years recorded in 2005 and 2001. In addition, the median income of RVers was $62,000 and 39% have children under 18 living at home. RV owners aged 35 to 54 posted the largest gains in ownership rates, rising to 11.2% in 2011 from 9.0% in 2005. Ownership also edged higher among those aged 55 and older, rising 9.3% from 8.6% in 2005.
