ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The New Mexico State Fair officially kicked off Thursday. It’s a tradition that includes food, lots of food. One of the highlights is on day one with a contest celebrating unusual New Mexico recipes.

The Unique Foods Contest this year had eight entrants. Judges narrowed it down to three.

“It’s fierce, it’s ferocious and it’s indulgence at its best,” said Dan Mourning, general manager of the New Mexico State Fair.

On the panel of judges was Rachel Jordan of the New Mexico CW and My50TV.

“It’s hard to pick my favorite, but the donuts are super good,” Rachel said.

First place:  Cowboy Nut Shoppe: Green Chile Pecans & Almonds Mix

“A fresh blend of pecans and almonds roasted to perfection, glazed with a cinnamon sugar mixture, and dusted with New Mexico Green Chile powder. Perfect for Fairgoers on the move,” according to a news release.

Second place: Deep Fried Cheese Curds: Bacon Green Chile Cheese Curds

“Just when you thought Green Chile Cheese Curds couldn’t get better, these guys added bacon. Served with green chile ranch dressing,” according to a news release by the fair.

Third place:  Daisy Mini Donuts: Chocolate Raspberry Chipotle Donuts

“Fresh miniature donuts served with a side of Daisy’s Original Chocolate Raspberry Chipotle Sauce. Sweet, spicy, and delicious!,” the news release said.

The state fair continues through September 20.
