Farmington man tries to bribe police in 4th DWI arrest

FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – Farmington police arrested a man for his 4th DWI after he fled the scene of a crash. Officers were dispatched to Main Street and San Juan Boulevard around 8:00 Tuesday night after witnesses saw a man speeding and then rear-end another vehicle at a red light. They say he then got out and left. When officers found 35-year-old Brian Gishie they say he tried to bribe them.

APD brings Christmas joy to burglarized daycare

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A thief almost ruined Christmas for kids at daycare until police stepped in and helped them out.  A burglar broke into and stole from the Hope Head Start Nursery on Louisiana and Zuni last month. The man was caught on surveillance video loading up garbage bags full of hundreds of dollars worth of food, silverware and more. The headstart had to use its entire Christmas budget meant for gifts to replace the stolen items. The Albuquerque Police Department’s “Santa Patrol” officers delivered dozens of gifts collected in the community. The officers also spent time with the kids after the special delivery. The burglar still hasn’t been caught.

Student artwork to be featured on ABQ’s newest buses

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Some Albuquerque high school students are wrapping, but it’s not what you think. They are wrapping city buses in artwork as part of a high school project.

Four students won a design contest with drawings that will be wrapped around the city’s newest buses with the theme “Let’s Clear the Air.” The winning designs were selected by a panel of judges and they will be displayed on the buses for a year. The buses are powered by natural gas.

Search continues for missing man in ski area

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – There is still no sign of the man who is believed to have gone missing near the Santa Fe Ski Basin. The search and rescue mission had been looking for clues to the disappearance of Laurence Longwell. He was last seen Thursday at his Santa Fe home. Santa Fe police reported him missing on Saturday. State police found his vehicle at the Windsor Trail Head parking area. He was last seen wearing a black jacket with white sleeves.

Santa Fe girl, 8, brings Christmas to four families

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A Santa Fe second grader continues to make the holidays brighter for the less fortunate. Linda Gonzalez, 8, gave up her own Thanksgiving so that two families could have a dinner last month by raising $200 for a full Thanksgiving feast for the families. But Linda didn’t stop there, she has now raised more than $550 to provide Christmas for four families and it will include everything from the trees to the decorations. She also wrapped and will give away 94 gifts.

Man settles federal lawsuit with county over arrest

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A federal lawsuit filed by a Portales man claiming he was arrested for no reason has been settled. According to the Clovis News Journal, 58-year-old Abdoulaye Sarr was a student at Eastern New Mexico University when he was arrested for DWI three years ago. The paper reports, Sarr had no prior arrests and blew a zero on a breath test but still spent 15 days in jail and even lost his job. The charges were eventually dropped but Sarr claimed the arrest was race-related. Details of the cash settlement were not released.

Durango named true western town

DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) – Durango, Colorado is ranked as the top true western town. True West magazine will feature the city as number one in the February 2015 issue. One of the reasons it was picked is because of the railroad built in 1881. It’s a heritage that the magazine says is still alive and vibrant today. True West chooses towns they feel have best preserved their history.

Police investigate fight between boys, gas station attendant

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – State Police are investigating a fight involving some boys from a New Mexico halfway house and a Chevron attendant. The boys are part of a state program and are being reintegrated into the community. The incident happened at a Chevron on Candelaria and Edith but that’s about all State Police and the Children, Youth and Families Department are saying. Chevron officials say that everyone is OK.

High School students collect food, clothes for fellow students

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Santa’s elves have been hard at work at Valley High School. Students collected food and clothes for fellow students in need, some of them homeless. Instructors say the students like making a difference within their community and there has been so much generosity during this collection; an entire classroom had to be cleared to hold the items. This is the second year the school has taken part in the fundraiser. There are an estimated 5,000 homeless students in Albuquerque Public Schools.

Adults, children compete for top gingerbread house honors

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Artisan gingerbread builders put their craftsmanship to the test Wednesday at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center’s sixth annual gingerbread house contest. Adults and children alike built edible dwellings that pay homage to their own pueblos. Judging begins first thing Thursday morning and winners will be announced Friday afternoon. The first place winner will take home an $800 prize.
