“The Original Seed” Jay Adams, an original member of  the Zephyr Competition Team, better known as Z-Boys, and one of the most influential skaters of all time, has died.

Powell Peralta co-founder and Fellow Z-Boys member Stacey Peralta was among the first to report Adams’ death. Peralta cites a “massive heart attack” as the cause of death.

Adams spent most of the 80s and 90s in and out of prison as he battled drug addiction and his own demons, noted the NY Times back in 2008.

In 2005, Emile Hirsch played a young Adams in the acclaimed film, Lords of Dogtown. As a result of the film’s popularity, Adams found his stardom had risen once again and he returned to his first love, skateboarding.

Adams was 53.
