Chapman BaehlerCyndi Lauper is hitting the road this spring for an international tour in support of her forthcoming country album DETOUR. She’ll kick things off on May 9 at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium, which used to be the home of the Grand Ole Opry.
“There’s something so very magical about the Ryman and all the rich history there,” she says. “Just to think it’s the same stage where Wanda Jackson and Patsy Cline performed so long ago and here I am singing songs they made famous on this record -- it’s such an honor.”
But she also says she's nervous to take the stage at a place where so many legends sang before her. "It used to be the old Opry, so the voices of all those people will be hanging in the rafters," she says. "I just hope my voice is really good enough to hang up there with them."
"I gotta write a good set list," she adds.
On select dates of the 27-city trek, Cyndi will be joined by Boy George. North American dates wrap up June 12 in St. Augustine, Florida. The tour then heads to Europe, where it will conclude in Paris, France on July 11.
DETOUR -- an album featuring Cyndi’s renditions of country classics from the '40s, '50s and '60s -- is due out May 6. It features guest appearances from Jewel and country music stars like Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson.
“When I was a really young kid, country music was pop music, so this is what we grew up listening to,” Cyndi says. “These songs are part of some of my earliest memories so it has been an absolute thrill to revisit them.”
