How we helped:
Through our local partner, Puspadi Bali, we distributed 100 units of the Nazava Bening 2 water filter to people with disabilities and their families in Karangasem, Buleleng, and Tabanan regencies, Bali, Indonesia. Puspadi Bali distributed the technologies in two ways: door-to-door distribution and at a “Healthy Day” event in Bungaya village, Karangasem regency, Bali.
We also provided three units of the Nazava Bening XL water filter and two units of the Sun King Home 60 solar home system to Bungaya village which were installed at the newly built public library.

The problem:
Collecting and boiling water is time-consuming and costly for families living in remote areas of Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia. This was especially true for people who use wheelchairs and have limited mobility. Improper purification can lead to health problems such as waterborne diseases and diarrhea.
Time period:
Mar 2018
Reaching the last mile:
Our local partner, Puspadi Bali, distributed the technologies in three regencies: Tabanan, Karangasem, and Buleleng. The organization also taught the users how to use, clean, and maintain the technologies. Finally, they have agreed to help distribute the replacement tulip filters when the original tulip filters become too old.
The challenges:
One of the notable challenges was the locations of the technology users’ houses: some users lived far off the main road or in highland areas which were only accessible by foot. Our local partner also sometimes found it difficult to contact the users prior to the visit. As a result, when they arrived, the users were not at home. The other challenge was the language barrier because some of the users could not speak Indonesian which was resolved by the Balinese Puspadi Bali staff speaking the Balinese language with them.
What people are saying:
ONE
“The solar home system allowed us to reduce electricity costs and use the savings to buy books or cover other operational costs.”
Nengah Selandin, Librarian, Bungaya Village, Bebandem District, Karangasem Regency, Bali, Indonesia
TWO
“Before I received the water filter from Kopernik, I had to spend a lot of time and energy to boil water. Sometimes I drank water directly from the spring. Now, I don't do that anymore because the filtered water is always clear and fresh.”
I Gede Agus Arnawa, Tech User, Banyuning Barat Sub-Village, Banyuning Sub-District, Buleleng District, Buleleng Regency
THREE
"With my physical limitations, walking far distances to fetch water from a spring and then boiling it for daily consumption was difficult. The other option was to buy packaged water. I also have to look for firewood or buy cooking gas for boiling water. Since I started using the water filter, I have time to do other tasks and can save money as I don't buy packed water anymore."
