Four Top Tips to Help You Stay Safe During Spring Break

How to Keep Your Spring Break Accident-free

Whether you’re a parent who’s taking young children on a family trip or you’re a college student planning a trip to Lake Havasu or Mexico, spring break is fast approaching. These tips will help keep you safe and accident-free during your trip:

Protect Yourself in the Sun

Spring break means fun in the sun, but a bad sunburn can put a damper on your trip. Make sure to protect yourself with sunscreen and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, especially if you’ve been in the water or are sweating.

Use the Right Gear for Recreational Activities

If you’re boating, wear a life jacket. Arizona law requires a life jacket on the boat for each person on board and children age 12 and under are required to wear one. If you’re skateboarding or participating in a similar sport, wear a helmet and elbow and knee pads.

Be Careful with Alcohol

If you’re drinking alcohol, stay within your limits. The risk of accidents and bad decision-making can go up dramatically if you become intoxicated, and it can also make you more vulnerable to assault. Make sure to not get behind the wheel of a car or boat or other watercraft after you’ve been drinking. Saturation patrols and Operating Under the Influence (OUI) checkpoints are conducted on Arizona’s lakes and rivers starting in March, and you may be subjected to blood, breath, and other tests. If you’re charged with OUI, make sure to consult with a personal injury lawyer.

Always Carry Your Cell Phone

Always make sure your cell phone is charged and with you, and make sure other members of your group have theirs as well. Program your contacts so you can access them via speed dial. If you’re traveling abroad, contact your cell phone carrier to make sure your phone will work there and to find out about rates.
