Best recipe apps for iPhone and Android

The food lovers among us will be pleased to know that they haven’t been left out when it comes to smartphone apps, so we’ve put together a list of the best foodie titles for both Android and iOS. These will show you how to get the culinary best out of your device.

Perfect Egg Timer – iOS - $0.99

Even the best chefs will admit that the one thing that can be incredibly tricky to get dialed-in is the perfect boiled egg. Boil for too long and your egg could be rock hard. Don’t boil it for long enough and your plate could end up covered in a watery mess! This app uses sound scientific algorithms, calculating the diameter of your egg and your altitude to help you decide how long to cook it for, depending on your hardness preference. It’s a must-have app for egg lovers.

Allthecooks Recipe Search – Android – Free

This app allows you to search through over 150,000 recipes by genre or ingredients and bookmark your favorites for fast access. You can upload your own recipes, complete with photos, for others to use and share, and also access forums to chat with other home cooks on a variety of food-related topics. It’s a comprehensive resource, especially considering the price tag.

Epicurious Recipe App – iOS/Android – Free

Epicurious is an award-winning app that offers recipes and lots more besides. Add recipes to your shopping list to show individual ingredients to purchase, share recipes via Facebook and Twitter and use the app to search by keyword, what’s in your fridge, seasonal ingredients or recipes for a specific holiday. The database also contains the all-important nutritional information for thousands of recipes, so you know exactly what you’re putting in your body.

Savored – iOS/Android – Free

If eating out is more your thing and you live in one of the supported areas, then Savored could be the app for you. Partnered with ZAGAT, Savored finds the best restaurants in and around Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. and seeks out the best deals, potentially saving you hundreds of dollars per plate. You can also use the app to make reservations with just a few taps of your fingertip.

TV Food Maps – iOS/Android - Free

This app is brilliant for fans of cooking shows or pop-culture obsessed travellers as it maps out restaurants and diners that have been featured on TV shows, such as "Man vs. Food" and "Top Chef." The free version details over 2,900 restaurants from 30 of the most popular shows and the premium upgrade will remove ads and actually alert you when you’re near a featured food outlet.  Perfect for when you feel like taking on Adam Richman and trying your hand at a massive burrito or super hot curry!
