TORONTO -- The Los Angeles Kings found a way to get past some of their struggles and left the reeling Toronto Maple Leafs in their wake. Dustin Brown scored the only goal of a shootout Monday as the Kings wrapped up a bizarre road trip with a 3-2 victory over the Maple Leafs. It was an unjust result for Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer, who was splendid with 40 saves only to be let down by his teammates. The only pucks that got behind him in regulation were the result of bad bounces. Justin Williams and Brown scored in regulation for Los Angeles (15-14-4). John-Michael Liles and Matt Frattin replied for the Leafs (16-13-4), who have just two wins in the last nine games. The Kings limped into Toronto having lost six of their last seven games, a stretch that saw coach Terry Murrary lose his job. But they finally had some good fortune shine on them early in the first period when Drew Doughty fired the puck into the offensive zone along the glass, only to have it kick off a stanchion and directly out in front. Williams calmly collected it and beat Reimer high at 7:54. It only took a few minutes before Toronto evened the score 1-1. Liles stepped off the point and met the puck as it bounced out from the boards, hammering a shot past Jonathan Quicks glove. Reimer began to make his presence felt during a second period where his team was outshot 16-4. He kicked a leg out to deny Simon Gagne early on and was only beat after the Kings received their second good break of the evening. The puck appeared to trickle outside the blue-line -- even Doughty appeared to pull up while trying to corral it -- but the linesman ruled it onside. Seconds later, it was in the back of the Leafs net after a tic-tac-toe passing play ended up on Browns stick at 14:58. That gave them a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, virtually a sure win for the team in the past. However, Frattin tied it at 2:56 by batting the puck out of midair after a pass from Mikhail Grabovski on the rush. It was the fourth goal of the season for the rookie and set the stage for overtime. The Kings managed to pull out a victory, setting the stage for the beginning of the Darryl Sutter era.
