I hope everyone has been having good holidays, with a little bit of time off here and there. We went up north to Sudbury to visit my family, where baby James got snuggled by everyone in my extended family for days on end and he loved every moment of it. Lila was excited to open her gifts, and bake cookies with grandma!
We had very little snow this holiday, but Guy promised her that they would build a snowman. So… they did. Except they plowed the snow in our cul de sac next to a chain link fence, so apologies for the kind of ugly building in the background (it’s a mixed space crossfit gym/woodshop/artist lofts sort of building). But the look on her face makes up for it, right? Just so excited!! And that photo of Guy with our babies… just melts my heart. I pilfered the two smaller photos from Guy’s instagram.
It took longer than expected, but I finally got some decent photo of James in his owl sleep sack! It felt like the grey days of winter were conspiring against any decent photos. While I love our home, if there was something I could change it would be more natural light. But such is the challenge of living in a town house in a busy city- space and light are prized commodities!
Pattern: Owlie Sleep Sack
Yarn and Needles: Cascade 220 Superwash Worsted, in Pumpkin. 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles.
Mods: Instead of the rolled edge, I worked a knit 1, purl 1 ribbing for 8 rounds instead, so that it would be a bit ore comfortable to lie on (and after seeing how good it looks on many of the other Owl Sleep Sack projects!). Ravelry project page is here.
Notes: I adore this little sleep sack, and so does James! He seems to nap for much longer when he is in it, which I take as a good sign. He is one of those babies that likes to be super cozy and really warm (Lila was the opposite, she got too hot very easily, and still does), no doubt true of many winter babies.
The arrival of baby James (early!) threw a bit of a wrench in my Christmas card plans. The morning I went into labour was the day I had set aside for getting them all out! This year, I went with something a little different- we used some artwork of Lila’s and had them foil pressed at Minted.com, which had a great selection of options for featuring your child’s artwork on a card:
I absolutely love the gold foil press effect, which is so difficult to photograph, but I tried (unsuccessfully) here:
You can see the family photo we took 3 days before James arrived, and then decided (since I never did get the cards out on November 30th like I planned) to print another of James from his birthday. You can see how long he is in that photo!
I was really impressed with minted.com process, where once you upload the image, they actually send you a proof back in a couple days to approve, so you can see exactly what the card will look like- the really clear image (not my kitchen snapshot) is the proof they sent back, which I love- you can still make changes or tweaks if it isn’t quite how you want it to be, which is awesome. Lately I’m a bit obsessed over gold foil pressed stationary and paper goods, they look so understated but really chic. After I got the cards, I also saw that they have beautiful foiled prints, and I particularly like the ones that are city maps or iconic landmarks- I know the holidays are over, but for those with birthdays coming up, I think these would be beautiful and really thoughtful ideas. I love the idea of getting a foil map done of Bristol, England, where Guy is from- I think it would be a beautiful reminder of our family ties to that lovely city.
