Established in 1881, the Queensland College of Art (QCA) is one of Australia’s oldest and among its largest Art Academies. The Queensland College of Art, incorporating the Griffith Film School, is a thriving community of photographers, artists, designers, and film-makers and plays a significant role in shaping the state of Queensland and Australia’s art and design culture.

The Queensland College of Art (QCA) is seeking to appoint a prominent designer and/or design academic to lead a reformation of its new Design Programs. The position of Head of Design involves leadership of QCA’s undergraduate and postgraduate Design programmes to build on QCA’s reputation for progressive teaching and research, and to shape design practitioners for the complex challenges of the 21st Century.

The new-look organisation of Design at QCA brings together over 600 design and digital media students across two of Griffith University’s campuses: the Southbank cultural precinct, on the banks of the Brisbane River, and at Southport on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Design hosts a comprehensive range of majors, including graphics, interior, product, industrial, fashion, digital and interactive media. Design research at QCA reflects engagement across this range of fields presenting opportunities for the integration of graphic design in innovative applications and interdisciplinary contexts. Design researchers at QCA are engaged in range of cutting edge activities including experimental typography, environmental graphics, digital media communications and 3D Digital Fabrication. The digital media research area was part of a grouping awarded a rating of “above world standard” in the 2015 round of Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) research quality assessments. There is a strong focus on sustainable design practices, with theory, community design enablement and agile methodologies are also key areas of investigation.

The successful appointee will be capable of leading an energetic youthful group of exciting design practitioners and researchers, developing world-class innovative approaches to design learning, and fostering cutting-edge research. This person will be a key member of QCA’s multi-disciplinary Executive Leadership Team, working together with QCA’s Director actively contributing to the development of one of Australia’s leading and rapidly developing Art, Design and Film colleges.

The appointment is offered within the range: Professor / Associate Professor. The level of appointment will be determined by the successful candidate’s qualifications, demonstrated experience in professional and academic areas and fit of profile in respect of leadership capacity.

This is a continuing, full time position based at the South Bank and Gold Coast campuses.

SALARY RANGE:
Associate Professor, Level E: $169,779 per annum . Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution: $198,642 per annum.

Professor, Level D: $131,801 – $145,205 per annum. Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution: $154,208 – $169,890 per annum.
