POSITION OVERVIEW

The Centre for Teaching and Learning is a service unit providing resources, advice and strategies to support and advance teaching and learning excellence for students and staff at SCU. Staff are spread across three campuses at Lismore, Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour.

The Centres work is underpinned by a learning-centred approach which positions learning at the centre of decisions and practice. This approach acknowledges the attributes and active roles of students, teachers, the disciplines, research and the community.

Staff from the Centre work side by side with academic staff and students to implement the University’s strategic directions through three staff teams Academic Practice, Academic Skills and Digital Resources. The Centre also manages university-wide teaching and learning projects.

The Manager, Academic Skills is responsible for effectively leading the Academic Skills team within the Centre for Teaching and Learning in their delivery of services and advice to the Universitys students, staff and stakeholders.

Academic Skills staff work closely and collaboratively with the University’s schools through a School portfolio approach to service and support. The Academic Skills team supports students’ development of self-management, language, learning and critical thinking skills as well as the development of academic literacy, numeracy and integrity. The team offers an extended suite of strategies for all award coursework students who study on campus and externally. These strategies include online resources, embedded workshops, generic online and face-to-face workshops, one-to-one consultations and Peer Assisted Student Sessions (PASS).

Working as part of the Centres management team, this position will work collaboratively within this team to achieve the Centres strategic outcomes, lead projects as set by the Director and contribute to the annual business planning process.

A strong record of management, practice-based research, publication and scholarship in the practice and theory of learning and teaching in higher education, broad educational technology skills, and strong communication and leadership skills are required to be effective in this role.

The successful applicant may be required to travel between all University campuses in order to undertake their duties.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Ideally, the appointee should possess the following qualifications, skills, abilities and experience:

1. A PhD in a relevant discipline.

2. Proven record of practice-based research, publication and scholarship in the practice and theory of learning and teaching and contemporary approaches to student learning support in higher education.

3. Proven strong track record of effective team leadership and management of staff.

4. Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of academic skills provision, curriculum and resources to support and enhance the effectiveness of student learning support and its links to student retention and success.

5. Currency in the use of contemporary educational technologies and proven, practical experience in delivering academic skills support in blended and online environments.

6. Demonstrated experience in leading student learning projects or change initiatives to improve approaches to student success.

7. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills including evidence of fostering positive working relationships and engagement with both internal and external stakeholders.

8. A capacity for adaptability and flexibility in a rapidly changing environment.

9. Demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity and a working knowledge of equity and workplace health and safety principles in the workplace.

Minimum Standards for Academic Staff

A Level C academic will make a significant contribution to the discipline at the national level. In one or more categories of scholarship he or she will make original contributions, which expand knowledge or practice in his or her discipline.

A Level C academic will make a significant contribution to the scholarship and administration activities of an organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area at undergraduate, honour and postgraduate level. He or she will play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarship and/or professional activities relevant to the profession, discipline and/or community and may be required to perform the full academic responsibilities of and related administration for the coordination of a large award program or a number of smaller award programs of the institution.

A Level C academic will make independent and original contributions to one or more categories of scholarship, which have a significant impact on his or her field of expertise. The work of the academic will be acknowledged at a national level as being influential in expanding the knowledge of his or her discipline. This standing will normally be demonstrated by a strong record of published work or other demonstrated scholarship activities. A Level C academic will normally provide leadership in research training and supervision.

Teaching Scholar Key Responsibilities

Teaching scholars will provide a high standard of teaching and learning, educational design and delivery, and leadership in the area of teaching and learning. They will contribute to the scholarship of teaching and engage in professional activities relevant to their profession or discipline. Teaching scholars will also be expected to undertake relevant community engagement and University service.

Compliance and Legislative Knowledge

All relevant federal and state legislation, rules and regulations.

Workplace Health and Safety

Comply with the University’s workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and instructions to ensure the health and safety of yourself and others at the University.

Take corrective action to eliminate hazards at the workplace, or report those beyond their control to their immediate supervisor.

Cooperate with the University to enable compliance with the relevant state WHS legislation and regulations.

Take all practical measures to ensure that the workplace under their control is safe and without risk to health, and that all persons in the workplace take reasonable care to ensure the workplace is safe and without risk to health.

Identify any unsafe or unhealthy conditions or behaviour and take corrective action for problems that are within their authority.

In situations where the supervisor does not have the authority to take corrective action, report unsafe or unhealthy conditions or behaviour to the Head of Work Unit, together with a recommendation for remedial action.
