Operations

BOQ’s operations comprisethe following key activities:

Banking

* Retail banking including everyday banking accounts, savings and investment products, credit cards and personal and home loans.
* Business banking including business loans, transaction accounts, business charge cards and investment and statutory trust accounts.

BOQ Finance

* This division incorporates the vendor finance businesses BOQ acquired in 2010, CIT Group (Australia) Limited and CIT Group (New Zealand) Limited; the Asset Finance and Leasing business acquired as part of Investec Bank (Australia) Limited in 2014; and the Bank’s existing equipment finance and debtor finance businesses.

BOQ Specialist

* BOQ Specialist delivers distinctive banking solutions to niche market segments, including medical, accounting and financial advisory professionals. BOQ acquired the business (previously Investec Professional Finance) as part of Investec Bank (Australia) Limited in 2014. BOQ Specialist operates as a separate division of BOQ’s Business Bank.

St Andrew’s Insurance

* St Andrew’s is a leading manufacturer of consumer credit insurance products with a solid history of partnering with financial institutions to deliver insurance solutions. BOQ purchased St Andrew’s in 2010 and continues to operate it as an independent entity, in much the same way as it was profitably operating prior to BOQ’s purchase.

Virgin Money Australia

* Virgin Money Australia is a retail financial services company that aims to provide a wide range of great value financial products that are easy to understand and sort out as well as be a compelling alternative to the Big 4 banks.  BOQ acquired Virgin Money Australia in 2013, and it operates as a standalone business within the BOQ Group.

Reporting into the Group General Counsel and Company Secretary, this role will be responsible for running the Corporate Advisory Services function for BOQ’s subsidiaries, including BOQ Finance, BOQ Specialist and Virgin Money Australia. Liaising with executives across the business  to ensure that legal services are provided in a manner that enables the business lines to achieve their objectives.

Key duties will include:

* Leading, developing and inspiring the team, including coordinating the work plan for the team; meeting regularly with staff to identify and resolve problems; conducting regular 1:1 meetings with direct reports assigning work activities and projects; monitoring workflow; reviewing and supervising work products, methods and procedures.
* Ensuring appropriate training is provided to internal stakeholders both within the Legal & Secretariat team and within the business, where appropriate.
* An active driver of implementing the Legal & Secretariat strategy that aligns with the BOQ Strategy and is focussed on continuous improvement and bringing to bear ‘best in class’ thinking and constant innovation to the function.
* Partnering the team with relevant divisions within the business.
* Co-coordinating and (if necessary) briefing and managing external legal counsel on legal matters
* Advising the Legal & Secretariat team and relevant business lines on legal and regulatory matters and developments relevant to the function.
* Liaising with relevant Government officials and regulators on matters that affect the organisation’s present and future activities
* Ensuring that the organisation operates fully within the law at all times, but with special reference to its methods of business, its contractual relations, and its process of negotiation
* Ensuring compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements and all relevant company and Group policies.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

* A legal degree and admission as a solicitor with at least 10 years’ post qualification experience.
* Demonstrated success as an Associate General Counsel (or equivalent role), or the ability to operate at that level, for a significant corporation or a major division of a large corporation (ideally publically listed) with multi-unit and multi-geographical operations in mature and competitive markets.
* Strong corporate and commercial experience in working with or acting on behalf of a Top 100 ASX listed entity.
* Strong knowledge of banking and finance law.
* An ability to lead strategic projects that deliver value to the business.
* Strong commercial negotiation skills with an ability to liaise with both senior internal and external stakeholders, including relevant Government officials and regulators on matters that affect the organisation’s present and future activities.
* A proven leader with demonstrated ability to achieve superior results with and through people.
* Influence and judgement to effectively represent the company in dealings with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators.
* Demonstrated effectiveness in cultural change, especially in terms of enhanced service delivery.
* Strong communication skills with all internal stakeholders and external stakeholders
* Strong intellect with superior strategic and analytical skills.
* Strong results orientation and a person who ‘gets on with it’, yet is also adept at engaging others and bringing them along on the journey.
* Experience in the financial services industry is preferable.
