Paediatrician

Sessional (0.2 EFT) to 29/01/2017

Parkville, Melbourne

The Hospital:

The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Melbourne is one of the world’s great children’s hospitals. We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas. With a passionate, highly skilled and committed staff campus wide of over 4500, we provide a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and young people.

The department:

Victorian Forensic Paediatric Medical Service (VFPMS) metropolitan services are provided at both RCH (Parkville) and the Monash Medical Centre (MMC) Clayton. In addition, a network of qualified regional health professionals provide VFPMS services in regional Victoria.

The VFPMS provides a coordinated state-wide forensic paediatric medical service to abused and neglected children, young people and their care-givers. The service provides 24 hour medical services for evaluation of childrens injuries and the evaluation of suspected child sexual abuse. Consultations are also provided to health professionals, police and child protection workers in relation to children for whom child abuse is suspected. The service is accessible and responsive to the needs of clients and other service users, with the aim of improving early identification, response and referral for services of children suspected of having experienced abuse or neglect.

The role:

An opportunity exists for a Paediatrician to join the VFPMS team for two sessions per week to provide forensic paediatric medical services. The two sessions may be rostered between the VFPMS clinics at RCH and MMC.

The Paediatrician will have a significant clinical role in teaching, training and supervision of staff, including advanced trainees of RACP. As part of the multidisciplinary VFPMS team, the Paediatrician will collaborate with health and counselling services to ensure that children, young people and their families access the broad range of health, mental health and support services available to them.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Applicants must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish healthy, professional working relationships with both internal and external partners, a quality focused and systematic approach to work and the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate expertise in clinical forensic paediatric medicine and demonstrated leadership skills.

Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing and conflicting priorities in a busy environment is also essential, as is flexibility and a can-do approach.
