Introduction
St. Albans Meadows P.S., which was established in 1980 is situated in the City of Brimbank, approximately fifteen kilometres to the west of Melbourne, just beyond the Western Ring Road. The community, which is somewhat isolated by the Ring Road and other major roads, is dominated by the Grantham Green housing estate which is now quite well established.
Many young families occupy houses in the estate and the majority of their children attend our school. Some students also attend the school from as far afield as Sydenham. St. Albans Meadows has a high reputation as a caring and progressive school and parents of students with gifted academic ability, learning difficulties and/or behavioural problems, in particular, choose the school because of the quality of its educational and welfare programs.
The school enjoys excellent relations with Sunshine Park Kindergarten from which most students enrolling in prep come from. The school is very poorly serviced by public transport so it runs its own bus service to accommodate the students.
Enrolment trends showed growth from 270 children in 1998 to 430 children in 2015. Enrolments are expected to remain fairly stable at the 400 plus students mark. 77% of the students are from non English speaking backgrounds (NESB) and 35% of these students are of Vietnamese descent. The NESB students represent a wide range of nationalities, linguistic groups and cultures
Guiding Principles

Frequent participation in quality Professional Development activities is encouraged and a very strong emphasis is placed on a team approach to curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation.
Curriculum
A comprehensive curriculum has been developed around the Australian Curriculum. Classroom curriculum programs are supported by specialist teachers in the areas of Art, Library, Lote, Physical Education, Performing Arts, E.A.L., Reading Intervention, Corrective Reading and Reading Recovery. Programs are enriched through numerous activities including excursions, guest speakers and artists, a camping program and special event days.
The following enrichment programs are also provided: Swimming, Interschool Sports, Intraschool Sports, Sports Academy, Fun Runs, Perceptual Motor Program, School Concerts, State School Spectacular, Instrumental Programs and lessons for Keyboard, Violin, Drums, Guitar, Ukelele, School Band, School Choir, School Dance Group, Homework Club, Chess Club, Minecraft Club, Early Bird Readers, Breakfast Club, University of NSW Assessment, Leadership Camp, Mathematics Intervention, Mathematics Extension, Family Maths Night, Literature Extension Groups, Literacy Intervention and Oral Language.
The school is proud of its Special Needs Program and is committed to its further development. The program is led by a full time Special Needs Coordinator who liaises with an educational psychologist, speech pathologist, community welfare agencies, parents, teachers and over 30 program aides that work closely with our students. There are a range of services that are tailored and designed for the individual needs of our students and their families.
Our Kitchen Garden Program provides our students with exciting learning and development of life long skills. The students are directly involved in growing, caring, harvesting and sharing the cooked meals they produce using our own organic produce. The school has completed the construction of a purpose built Kitchen Garden Centre where the students have access to state of the art facilities to use as part of our program. Images of these facilities can be seen on our facilities gallery. Students have established a whole school composting initiative to further support our Kitchen Garden program.
Parent involvement in the school is both valued and encouraged. School Council Membership is strong and sub-committees are responsible for the daily operation of the canteen, daily bus service and Fundraising. Parents also assist in curriculum classroom activities.

Selection Criteria
SC1 Capacity to undertake routine support tasks across a range of functions in one or more work areas within a school environment.
SC2 Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively with members of the school community including students and the capacity to provide support and/or attendant care to students where necessary.
SC3 Demonstrated proficiency in the use of office systems, software or technical equipment as relevant to the position.

Role
Undertakes routine tasks that are usually carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established and direction is readily available.
Work has little scope for deviation. Problems can usually be solved by reference to well documented procedures and instructions and clearly established practices. Deviation from established procedures will require reference to others for guidance and direction. Assistance is readily available when problems arise. An experienced employee at range 1 will exercise limited judgement within clearly defined guidelines and well established practices that relate specifically to the tasks performed.
Does not carry responsibility for the work of others. More experienced employees will provide basic guidance and advice to others relating to tasks within the work area.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee’s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Qualification requirements do not operate at range 1. Certification requirements may be required to legally perform specific tasks – e.g. driver’s licence, first aid, safe food handling.
Responsibilities
- Assist students on an individual or group basis in specific learning areas. – Assist with the communication between students and teachers, particularly the interpretation of instructions. – Provide basic physical and emotional care for students. – Participate in team meetings. – Assist with toileting, meals, lifting, and administration of medication to students requiring special care. – Assist with the supervision of pupils in playgrounds, at camps, on excursions, in sporting activities, therapy activities and life skills. – Assist in the preparation of student resources and equipment. – Prepare basic curriculum support resources. – Set up and put away equipment and materials in support of teaching programs. – Observe students and draw the attention of the teacher to them where necessary. – Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of programs and evaluation of individual student involvement and achievement. – Assist with communication between teachers and non-English speaking parents/students. – Assist in the translation of documents. – Assist students with the preparation and service of meals. – Ensure work areas and materials, equipment and appliances are maintained in a clean and ready to use condition. – Assist in the preparation of equipment and purchasing of materials and supplies as required.
