Location Profile

The Seymour Flexible Learning Centre, part of the North East Flexible Learning Network (NEFLN), is a partnership between the Wodonga Senior Secondary College and the North East Victoria Region of the Department of Education. The Seymour Flexible Learning Centre is one of four campuses of the NEFLN, situated at Tallarook Road, Seymour. The focus is to re-engage vulnerable young people between 14 – 19 years of age with education and to support them to participate positively within the community.

The Seymour Flexible Learning Centres approach revolves around the individual needs of each student and is built on the establishment of positive working relationships within the context of the local community. Students pursue a program that aims to strengthen and consolidate foundation skills in Literacy and Numeracy, and the opportunity to undertake an Intermediate or Senior VCAL program while providing access to meaningful work experience and vocational preparations.

A personalised learning plan sets individual goals, informs program planning and determines timetables and attendance. A mentoring program and partnerships with local community organisations such as TAFE and employment support agencies ensure that our students have access to broader community networks.

Student Profile

The Seymour Flexible Learning Centre enrols young people aged between 14 and 19 years of age who, for a variety of reasons or circumstances, have been out of school for extended periods of time, and have difficulty engaging in a mainstream setting. These may include young parents, students with mental health issues, learning difficulties, previously home schooled and students with social and behavioural issues. Generally they are not currently enrolled in a school, or have not attended for a significant period of time.

The Seymour Flexible Learning Centre is not targeted for those who are currently enrolled in schools, nor those students for whom schools are finding it difficult to cope with or manage their behaviour.

Young Parents Program

The Young Parents Program, beginning February 2016, aims to provide Young Parents with educational opportunities and Pathways in a setting that is supportive and inclusive of their educational and personal needs. The Young Parents Program is run in conjunction with a local youth agency, The Bridge, and is conducted in an environment where young parents can be with their children whilst studying.

Program Aims

The aims of the Seymour Flexible Learning Centre are:

to establish a positive and rewarding relationship between the Centre and the young person

to reconnect the young person with learning inside and outside the Centre by connecting them to their community

to assist the young person to develop a positive image of themselves

to work with the young person to understand possible pathways to future learning and employment

to create a learning environment that allows young people to work with dedicated teachers both at the Centre and remotely using a wide variety of online learning tools

to understand what issues the young person is dealing with and ensure they have access to the appropriate supports so that they have some clear air to attend to their learning and career pathways

Role

The primary focus of the range 1 classroom teacher is on further developing skills and competencies to become an effective classroom practitioner with structured support and guidance from teachers at higher levels and the planning, preparation and teaching of programs to achieve specific student outcomes.

These teachers teach a range of students/classes and are accountable for the effective delivery of their programs. Range 1 classroom teachers are skilled teachers who operate under general direction within clear guidelines following established work practices and documented priorities and may have responsibility for the supervision and training of one or more student teachers.

At range 1, teachers participate in the development of school policies and programs and assist in the implementation of school priorities.

The focus of a range 1 classroom teacher is on classroom management, subject content and teaching practice. New entrants to the teaching profession in their initial teaching years receive structured support, mentoring and guidance from teachers at higher levels.

Under guidance, new entrants to the teaching profession will plan and teach student groups in one or more subjects and are expected to participate in induction programs and other professional learning activities that are designed to ensure the integration of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across the school.

Teachers at range 1 are responsible for teaching their own classes and may also assist and participate in policy development, project teams and the organisation of co-curricula activities.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students who are participating in the Young Parents Program;

Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students participating in other programs conducted at Seymour FLC;

Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum program within Seymour FLC;
