HEAD OF INFORMATION LITERACY P

12

Emmanuel College seeks to employ highly motivated, talented and qualified, QCT registered

teachers who are committed to their vocation and to life-long learning.

The Head of Information Literacy P-12 will be an innovative, high calibre, qualified and experienced Teacher

Librarian. This position requires a passion for literacy and for modelling best practice research skills, using

appropriate ICTs to develop and encourage confidence in independent and collaborative learning. The

Teacher Librarian will be an effective leader who works in consultation with colleagues to engage students in

a vibrant learning environment. While this is a 12 month contract, the Teacher Librarian will be expected to

maintain a high standard of teaching while developing students’ information literacy. Together with the Head

of e-Learning and a very experienced team of Library Technicians, Library Assistants and resident ICT support

staff, the Teacher Librarian will offer outstanding leadership and learning support to teachers and

students. Successful applicants will be selected because of their passion and teaching excellence.

The ideal applicant will have an in-depth knowledge of information literacy gained through post graduate

study. The ability to work closely with Director/s of Studies (Junior and Senior Schools), to deliver information

literacy skills programs and opportunities to staff and students P

12 is mandatory. Prior experience in

leading a team would be highly regarded.

This is a full time, temporary position commencing Friday 15 January 2015. This position is to cover maternity

leave for 2016.

Remuneration is in line with the Emmanuel College Collective Workplace Agreement current at the time of

appointment. This position attracts a teacher salary and additional allowances. Emmanuel College pays 11.

5% superannuation and provides a laptop for all academic staff, together with a robust professional learning

program, including peer mentoring.

The following selection criteria will be critical to the selection process.

Applicants who do not address the Selection Criteria may be disadvantaged.

Enthusiastic and student-centered approach to teaching

The successful applicant will be able to teach from P

Year 12 and will be a person who can relate

well to and manage students to engender in them an enthusiastic commitment to succeed.

2.

A commitment to academic excellence

The successful applicant will demonstrate, through personal experience and/or recent results in

teaching, a capacity to produce results of a high quality. This will include writing Information

Literacy Work Programs specific to each year level which will achieve the desired learning outcomes

and which will develop students to be confident, life-long learners

3.

A firm commitment to an active Christian Faith

All staff at Emmanuel College regularly attend a local Christian church and have an active Christian

lifestyle. (You may include how you believe your faith would influence the way you perform in your

role and interact / support the College community and colleagues).

4.

Staff Management

The Head of Information Literacy will provide guidance and oversight of library staff to ensure the

smooth day to day operations of the Library and will work alongside the Senior Library Technician in

relation to technical operations of the library. This position also requires collaboration with Heads

of Departments and with the Director of Studies (Senior School) and Director of Teaching and

Learning (Junior School) on how best to resource the curriculum.

5.

Emmanuel College bases its doctrines and tenets on the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, which the

School regards as the inspired and inerrant Word of God. These doctrines and tenets are expounded in

many of Emmanuel Colleges public and internal documents, both printed and on the schools website,

and viewable by staff as part of their appointment process. These documents inform our understanding

of the lifestyle values which staff who work in this school are required (subject to the provisions of

relevant State and Commonwealth discrimination laws) to respect and maintain at all times, and should

be understood as source documents, defining our doctrines, tenets, beliefs or teachings.

All staff of Emmanuel College, regardless of their role, are required to be seen to conduct themselves in

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Head of Information Literacy P – 12

Accountability:

The Head of Information Literacy (HIL) will report to the Deputy Principal, and ultimately to the Principal.

It is expected that the HIL will carry out the role with dedication and enthusiasm, seeking to inspire other staff

members with an innovative, positive and energetic example.

Role Scope and Conditions:

The Head of Information Literacy is the teaching interface between the library and teaching staff and is primarily

responsible for teaching information literacy skills from P

Year 12. The HIL works closely with the Directors of

Studies (Junior and Senior School) in order to ensure that teaching of up to date information literacy skills is

provided to students and staff and information literacy programs and opportunities are implemented in each

year level.

The HIL will provide guidance and oversight of library staff and will work alongside the Senior Library Technician

in relation to technical operations of the library. This will include providing guidance and direction in relation to

the purchasing of texts, electronic resources and tools, teacher reference books/resources and subscriptions in

order to support curriculum and teaching needs from P

12.

This is a full-time teaching position with co-curricular and extra-curricular responsibilities being library focused.

The HIL provides after hour student supervision and homework/assignment support for students from 7-12. The

after hours are flexible and dependent on student needs.

Qualifications:

The Head of Information Literacy must be a registered Teacher in Queensland, preferably able to teach from P –

12. It is important that the HIL holds a recent qualification in an information management/literacy discipline and

has prior experience or knowledge of a school library.

The ability to lead a team is critical, however this skill may have been gained through experience rather than

formal training.

It is expected that all teaching staff will be involved in professional associations outside the College and will

undertake regular personal development and in-service.

Every College employee must have a personal faith and commitment to Jesus Christ and are to be in regular

fellowship and good standing with a local Christian church. Traditional Christian values must be lived out and

Duties & Responsibilities:

CURRICULUM / TEACHING

Be familiar with curriculum requirements, planning and development.

Maintain a high level of knowledge about childrens literature to promote and advise students and staff.

Support academic staff to embed information literacy education in the curriculum.

In collaboration with teachers and curriculum leaders, plan, deliver and evaluate information literacy lessons

or training sessions.

Attend Curriculum Committee meetings from time to time as requested by curriculum leaders or Heads of

School.

Assist students in the use of information communication technology in the context of the curriculum,

engaging the support and assistance of other library staff where possible.

RESOURCE COLLECTION

In collaboration with the Senior Library Technician, develop and implement strategies for evaluating the

resource collection including reading and review of materials to ensure resources reflect the ethos and

values of a Christian School taking into account the range of needs in a P

12 School.

Develop resources and services responsive to student and teacher needs.

LIBRARY FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Provide a stimulating and helpful environment

for students learning

, showcasing student work and displays.

As team leader, guide staff and participate in a range of library projects such as Book Week, Book Fair and

visiting authors.

Ensure student behavior is conducive to effective learning for all who use the library.

Develop a library culture that ensures a friendly and vibrant centre for learning is available for the College

community from 7 am to 5:30 pm.

Involve the students in the operation of the library to contribute to their love of lifelong learning and

reading.

Oversee the successful and appropriate use of Library facilities in a P – 12 context.

Contribute to the Librarys digital notice board.

STAFFING / ADMINISTRATION

Develop and lead the library team, empower and supporting staff to meet the expectations and

responsibilities of their roles.

Provide effective support, guidance and oversight non-teaching staff in the library, including mentoring,

conflict resolution, rosters, completion of appraisals etc.
